People need it.
People want it.
People lie about it.
People fight even war over it.
People steal it.
People are homeless because of it.
People are sick because of it.
People starve because it.
People are uneducated or illiterate because of it.
People are killing the climate over it.
People drive species to extinction over it.
People are ultimately miserable because of it.

@thatfrisiangirlish and I just had one of our "Thinking too much about media" talks and came to the conclusion that Jesse, James and Meowth are no more evil than your average Starbucks Barista.
Starbucks is almost certainly responsible for stealing the joy and futures of plenty of kids in South America and Africa. Coffee beans are generally harvested with Child Labor. A great deal of instutions in both Germany and the USA are invested into Israel. Before that they were invested in maintaining South African Apartheid.
Corps like Chic-fil-A have a vested interest in destabilizing Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa and make the death penalty for Gay People policy. People that work in these places are generally not considered evil because the other option for many minorities is often being homeless.
Truth be told Jesse and James are abysmal at their jobs. They could have walked through grass to get a pikachu faster. If we are being honest Jesse and James are dramatically less evil than the CEO of Team Rocket, who is absolutely evil, but not really personally. They generally are working part time jobs trying to make it by because Team R does not pay them a living wage.
Conclusion Jesse and James are less evil than your average Starbucks employee.

So I want to say that the Borg are the perfect enemy for Starfleet because of how similar they are. The Borg have the goal of "We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us."
Does Data want to be Data or does he endeavor to become human because humans are the best? Who told him that? Picard? Kirk literally said in his Eulogy of Spock in Wrath of Kahn "Of my friend, I can only say this: of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most... human. ". A race he consistently tried to seperate himself from from both the Vulcan's and the Humans.
I personally see in the federation a neoliberal utopia that doesn't seek to respect cultural differences but rather to eradicate them and supplant them with "humanity". Like they heckle, harrass and discriminate against Vulcans and Klingons throughout every series. It's like the whole background of B'elenna in Voyager. Even Quark and Garak have a conversation in DS9.
Quark: It's [Root Beer ] so bubbly, cloying...and happy.
Garak: Just like the Federation.
Quark: And you know what's really frightening? If you drink enough of it, you begin to like it.
Garak: It's insidious.
Quark: Just like the Federation.
When they talk about the Federation, Earth is always what they are talking about. The founding members were Humans, Andorians and Vulcans. I really feel there are benefits to the federation. Erasing Economy, Defense, Curing disease etc etc all at the complete erasure of your country, culture and past to be supplanted with the glorious history of earth.
I get there are differences but the end goal of the Borg and the Federation are practically identical and they will use force if you resist. Maybe I sound like a Romulan or Cardassian propaganda artist but like ffs fam, this never read as a communist utopia to me but rather a white-washed neo-liberal one.
I think I think too much but the Borg are the perfect Foil for the Federation.

One of the things I really don't get about High Fantasy is how stagnant technology is. Like Sauron falls the first time cr. 2000 years before the events of Lord of the Rings takes place and you're telling me that Anduril is still a powerful sword? There has been no clear technological change since Melkor/Morgoth has been walking around.
Or like in BG3 Shadowheart is amongst the Youngest and she's like 50 years old. Astarion is like over 200 and Halsin is over 300 and there's been no change? In fact it seems there's been practically zero change since Karsus.
Even something like Star Wars. It's a space opera. It's close enough to high fantasy. But the Sith have risen and fallen like twice to no real change in technology at all. The Star wars universe has been technologically stagnant for 1000s of years.
There's plenty of other examples but in our time the age of steel was like from 500 BCE to like 1500. And even within that 1000 years technology and forging increased dramatically. That leads me to believe the power of Magic and the Force is actually so powerful that it trivializes technological advancement and stills progress.
Maybe it's thinking too deep but maybe our advancement in our universe from copper to bronze to iron to steel to the modern age has more to do with the absence of magic. We don't have the ability to just delete hunger with a spell so we have to invent machines to do it.
