Grateful for Madders return, even if limited and rusty.
Cannot say we deserved anything more than we got, but at least we look like a professional football club again, undeterred by the opponent.
On to Chelsea, hopefully with Dom splitting time with Richy.

Roberto De Zerbi has been at Spurs 35 days. Four games in, and absorbing injuries, his team has developed. RDZ has quickly seen that he has got players to engage in a more mobile and consistent press. More of a fighting spirit. A fit Joao Palhinha is invariably a leader, always a fighter.
Paired with Rodrigo Bentancur, Palhinha gives Spurs some steel and streetwise nous in midfield. Patrolling right central midfield, Palhinha has the positional intelligence to cover for Pedro Porro. RDZ used Palhinha from the bench in his first three games and then start against Aston Villa and he was immense, a warrior, and surely starts the rest of the run-in.
RDZ has gone for experience in midfield (his own area as a player). Conor Gallagher, 26yo, 300+ games, chased Villa all over. Interesting to see how/when RDZ blends in younger talents like the whole-hearted Archie Gray, who has given everything in a difficult season, and the stylish Lucas Bergvall. Spurs have a €30m option to buy Palhinha from Bayern Munich. He’s 31 this summer. Stick or twist?
What is clear is how much RDZ enthuses Spurs players already. His expressive behaviour in the dug-out may annoy officials (one sighed on hearing of his return to PL) but sends a message to players of the need for high energy. Performance against Villa was impressive. They just have to maintain this level of intensity. #THFC

Late goal not enough, Spurs most loyal fans want Levy out, their views been coming over loud and clear. Postecoglou will be the one who eventually goes. That’s what clubs do. The manager pays the price for poor results and performances and lack of progress. But the problem at Spurs lies far deeper than a stubborn, uninspiring manager who resembles a spectator on the touchline (who, in fairness, has horrendous injury problems to contend with; nb like some other managers).
The problem even goes further back than an unpopular chairman who is detached from fans. Levy has done some good things, notably the stadium and training ground, but has failed to address the central problem - that predates him - and that is ensuring the recruitment of more and better players with a tougher mindset.
Spurs have nobody like John McGinn, a battler who can play, who’s at it for 90 mins. Now there’s a real captain. Son Heung-Min has been a fine player for Spurs but he’s fading. And he’s not a leader in difficult times like this. “Lads, it’s Tottenham”. Pretty but not winners. Spurs have to change their mentality as much as their head coach and chairman. It’s a problem of culture #THFC #AVLTOT #ASTTOT

It’s hard to make a proper judgement call on Ange Postecoglou until the triangle of Vicario-Romero-Van de Ven is restored. Imagine Arsenal without Raya-Saliba-Gabriel. Postecoglou has flaws, set-pieces, risky high line at times and not realising that stubbornness is different from single-mindedness. His players’ lack of fight in the North London Derby (Bergvall, Spence and Gray honourable exceptions) reflects poorly on his team-talks as well as their character. It’s the Derby - commitment is the starting point. The captain, Son, scored but he’s not the force he was. It’s a mentality thing as much as ability with Spurs. And injuries. The squad depth isn’t there.
Postecoglou is hardly the only manager trying to cope with an injury crisis. Andoni Iraola has 8 players out at Bournemouth, still doing well (8th in PL), still getting a balanced, organised, very competitive XI out, but then he's a better manager (tactically, in-game management etc) than Postecoglou (and will go to a CL club one day). There still has to be sympathy for Postecoglou as most of his absentees in one area. Imagine a team of: Vicario; Porro/Spence, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Bergvall, Bentancur/Maddison (depending on opponent then Maddison as a 10), Gray; Kulusevski, Solanke, Moore. That’s decent. European qualification strength. Good age balance.
Spurs have some good players (also Johnson, Bissouma, Sarr, Richarlison when fit, Kinsky when he learns about intensity of English football). But the squad needs strengthening. 13th is poor. The lack of intensity in the Derby was poor. It’s now about getting that defence fit, and Postecoglou getting more out of them. #NLD #THFC #ARSTOT
