  1. There’s not too many American films made nowadays that can truly be called epics but this is definitely one of them

    #TheWomanKing (2022)
A historical epic inspired by true events that took place in The Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries.

  3. #TheWomanKing was fantastisch

    Nu #MichielDeRuyter aan het kijken

Eerst van achter mijn oogleden maar nu weer met open ogen

Rust helpt kennelijk want de pijn in de schouder is weer draaglijk

  4. On #LaborDay I watch a film about #slavery b/c if we’re going to recognize the #workforce, we should acknowledge that the #US achieved great success by forcing #Black bodies to perform free labor. This year’s pick #TheWomanKing was amazing. I ❤️#ViolaDavis

  5. Just watched #TheWomanKing again and have a fresh burning resentment for everyone who failed to give Viola Davis every last honor there is.

  6. #LolaTAC (The Awesome Cat 🐈) #HappyPurrsday hoomans it's day 152/365 of my daily posting photos of me. Dad just got back from an essential shop & got an energy drink (sugar free) cos he needs it to keep up with me😹 More impurrtantly he gots me #TheWomanKing starring the uber talented #ViolaDavis

  7. I really enjoyed #TheWomanKing. #violadavis is so good in it. The movie brought to mind a book I read several years ago by #zoranealehurston called #Barracoon. She interviewed a former slave, Kossula who related his story of being captured by the Dahomey warriors, many of whom were women in 1860. I highly recommend the book although the Dahomey don’t come off as well as in the movie.

  8. Wat een prachtfilm op #Netflix#TheWomanKing. Gekeken met zijn allen hier thuis.

  9. Subtitles on #Netflix for #TheWomanKing every time there was ululating (which as you know if you saw the movie, there was a lot of)

  10. #Oscars usually of no interest cos I’ve rarely had a chance to see the year’s newest crop of films beforehand

An exception this year would be #TheWomanKing which I happily paid for thru itunes, and which exceeded all my hopes/ expectations for it; Not just well made, but great story-telling with none of the usual “dead-spots” /formulaic/ or downright annoying scenes of typical “action” movies. (And a joy to watch something which doesn’t automatically ASSUME it is the “natural order of things” for nations to war with /dehumanise each other. Yes, conflict/ lust for power is common, but can we occasionally consider striving for alternatives?)

… so, idly curious rather than hopeful to see how #TheWomanKing went in the oscars, only to discover it was snubbed by the academy.

Do industry movers and shakers seriously believe NO white people at all are interested in movies that don’t centre white people?

  11. @paulkatz It's not a matter of percentage. It's really a shame that all of the nominated directors are men. There were some phenomenal films directed by women this year.

    I'm especially disappointed that #TheWomanKing wasn't represented for #ViolaDavis or director #GinaPrinceBythewood . #Oscar #Oscars

  12. #Watching #TheWomanKing

i have been waiting so long to see this movie…
it was worth every cent i paid to buy a copy now

Rating: 7 Wows out of a possible 5

  13. Finally saw #TheWomanKing and omg the #Oscars are so wrong. Definitely a top 10 movie, definitely #ViolaDavis (and arguably #ThusoMbedu) for acting, and costume or makeup/hairstyling. Ugh. Basically my thoughts on it:

  14. I'm finally getting to watch #TheWomanKing. I missed it in the cinema and have been waiting to rent it for months.

And now that I'm watching it I think that it is, at best ... meh.

I really wanted to love it cos it's a Hollywood movie set in Africa, but it's no better than average Nollywood fare.

The acting isn't great - especially Lashana Lynch - and the accents are all over the place.

    How disappointing.

  15. Why y'all didn't tell me how good #TheWomanKing was? I might have to give this a second round.

  16. #TheWomanKing is available on Netflix now. I just watched it for the third time. I reviewed it the first time I saw it back in December, but I don’t think I praised it enough at the time. Both #violaDavis and #GinaPrinceBlythewood are not winning the awards they should be winning for this brilliant #film. oldaintdead.com/the-woman-king

  17. I saw #TheWomanKing tonight, and I was deeply impressed with the soundtrack. Both the African pieces and the orchestral interludes were fantastic. The credits rolled, and the composer was #TerenceBlanchard. I should have guessed.
