The Wanted Detective was a surprisingly entertaining costumed detective drama during the busy CDrama summer months of 2025. An original script ( a rare breed) with tight plotting and fascinating characters.

OhBoyOhBoyOhBoyOhBoyOhBoy! They're performing a sacrificial ceremony and we get to see the entire(?) thing! My inner historian of religion is so happy she's bouncing up and down like toddler on sugar!
(I'll soon calm her down with things like 'exams' and 'in-house academia politics' but I want to allow her this moment.)

On one hand I dearly want one of the characters to point at Zhuge Kongyun and go
"Nah, we can't trust that guy! Look! He's all dressed in black!"On the other hand I'm distracted by their map/model of the city. It's juuust the right size - with some distance pegs and a nice glass sheet it'd make the _perfect_ dining table!

I can't be sure, but I think this is another case of Fun With Symbolism. That jade pendant his majesty is grabbing so hard is probably the plaque that is his "ID card" and gives him his authority as an emperor. And, given they're discussing social stability, they're cutting _deep_ here.

Speaking as a former researcher of history of religion I appreciate the times we see libation sacrifices*. They've never been on my radar, so I've only seen them mentioned. Being cheap there's also a risk they're so common they never get described because "everybody knows". C-drama is a case of living knowledge; the actors know how to perform them, and they're known enough by the audience to be a plot point.

I think this is the best shot I've ever got of the 'different profiles, different colours' principle. One white and one black character with different hair styles that gives their heads different shapes. The soldier has shoulder protection that gives him sharp edges, while the civilian wears hanfu that makes him soft, fluffy, and rectangular. The armour of the soldier gives him an hourglass look. Schoolbook example!

CW: Very spoiler, The Wanted Detective
It's interesting. Whenever medically manufactured supersoldiers show up in C-drama it tend to be a critique of the concept. I can't remember an equivalent to Captain America's 'it's ok if it's done with the right guy' - the closest I come is a 'we're _lucky_ it happened to _this_ guy'. That the thing goes south, like here, is more common.
Food for thought.

Gold star for The Wanted Detective writers! The team just entered a dungeon without torches and could actually not see. It was obvious the actors could, but they did some effort to feel their way along the walls etc. In this pic they've just - logically - stumbled upon an wuxia lighter and found a candle once they lit it. Storytelling hat trick for no torches, not seeing, and logical sources of light!

Something I really _really_ appreciate with C-drama is that people freeze when it's cold. There are instances of unrealistic habits and survival, _but_ people huddle, shiver, and cold hyperventilate. There's also makeup like the cold blushes you can see here and even eyebrow frost if it's cold enough. This group is also calculating on a survival time of 1h, which is slightly too long, yet more realistic than... [cue 1h long rant]

Our friends here is about to commit the 'didn't listen to the woman' mistake. Some things stays the same regardless of if it's Hollywood or C-drama land.

I still consider myself a C-drama noob, but I've seen a lot of them now. This the second time _ever_ I've seen a character with their hair cut short. C-drama land do take their liberties with hairstyles, but this is a thing they seem to stick to; a person with short hair has done something reeeaaally bad.
Edit: there's a [spoiler] so I won't elaborate further (aunty can't burn midnight oil anymore).

CW: Injury/body horror (The Wanted Detective)
I've put this under cw, because it's a picture that gets under your skin. But injuries like this should be way more common in fantasy and alternate history. If you read through archaeology reports about Medieval remnants you get an insane amount of horrendous injuries that people
A: survived
B: lived with long enough that they started to heal. -

If you read my comments for a while you know that I don't like limited palettes. They look good, are an interesting art exercise, but are in the end pretty boring. I suspect this partially due to growing up in the IKEA mainland where taste = gray with a hint of yellow. I have to admire this production's consistency though! Either someone was tasked with hunting through every ribbon shop in China, or they had these ones specially made for the drama.

This drama is clearly set up to A Limited Palette. Note, though, that the costume designers have managed to cram out three different hues of blue for the characters. They also have different profiles, and different waists; Tong has a broad leather belt, Feng has a fabric belt slightly askew, and What'sHerName have a ribbon neatly tied on top of hers. So much character design in one little detail!

That detailing on Zhuge Konyun's leather vest is insane! I may have to add "hero vest" to my vocabulary, because this is the official ~police uniform. Several characters and extras wears it, and I doubt they sew all those decore seams on every costume. But I don't know (and may never know) - sometimes costume makers are just that insane.

Is it really an wuxia if none of the main characters is under influence of a slow working, non-cureable, deadly poison? Debateable. But I have to admit this is the first drama I've seen where the male lead has poisoned himself _twice_. So far*.
(*I have admit I hope for a few times more, just for the sake of record breaking.)

I wonder how many period socks C-drama land wears out each day? It has to be a gigantic amount, considering how popular wuxia and xianxia are. Since I have zero knowledge in Chinese sock history I won't speculate in how they're worn there. But this close-up illustrates both how they're made, and why knitted socks got so pupular in Europe - once knitting became common.

There's no better example of how the costume designer thinks about structure than Tong Chuan's jacket. I've been admiring it for several episodes, so getting this close-up is a true high score! From what I can see it's a lose grid of structured ribbons sewn to a backing of the exact same colour, probably cotton fabric. Outstanding work! If I was the actor I'd be tempted to steal the thing, because it also looks comfy!
