Radio Free Skaro #1062 – The Daleks Will Stop at Anything
http://traffic.libsyn.com/freyburg/rfs1062.mp3The time has come and the two previously missing but now gloriously present episodes of The Daleks’ Master Plan, namely The Nightmare Begins (Episode 1) and Devil’s Planet (Episode 3), are here to be viewed and reviewed! They appeared not only on the BBC iPlayer but also in full on the US (but not Canadian, feh) Classic Doctor Who Youtube channel, and we have viewed said episodes and have thoughts. But that’s not all we also have an interview with Toby Hadoke, who hosted a screening at Riverside Studios and reflects with Steven on the screening, the episodes, and the overall wonder that is their return!

I watched an episode of Doctor Who tonight. The Star Beast with The bloody Meep.
It was interesting.
However, I'm not going to make this a habit. Yes, way back when, I watched every episode I could lay my hands on. I even bought some episodes on VHS. (I no longer have them.)
Those times are over.

Finally catching up on #DoctorWho, and sharing some thoughts. #TheStarBeast was very silly fun. Has this show always been this silly?
What I found a bit annoying is its wokeness. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for LGBTQI+ representation but it felt very in my face in this episode. Look, a trans character! Did we mention she's trans? Look, look, look!
NuWho always had great LGBTQI+ chars, but they were always just there, and a normal part of the story, and that was awesome and how it should be.

Also fairly random point but something about how The Doctors coat flowed with his movements reminded me of Jack Harkness. It just didn't move, or didn't fit him, like they did with Ten. This could be Tennant is older, moves a bit differently or maybe put on a few pounds so it drapes his body different, though I'm wondering if that might have been somewhat deliberate as part of differentiating 10 and 14.

And even aside from all the trans stuff there was a cool story.
I liked that while Donna was suspcious of The Meep from the start, and did drop an "I told you so"... Rose was never criticized for starting with kindness. It didn't work out, that way, but no one said she was wrong for starting with it. -

I also think that random kid who was watching stuff happen and chatted with Rose a bit was important, because not every trans person has parents as awesome as Donna and Shaun, but they need to be reminded there are still people out there who will respect who you are. He had almost nothing to do as far as the plot goes, but in terms of the social impact of this episode he becomes much more important.

Donna and Shaun were shown to be good supportive parents, they loved and supported their daughter, her being trans had all of zero impact on this. They were not presented as particularly heroic for this, or that they struggled, they just supported their daughter because of course they supported their daughter.
It was presented as just a thing good parents do, completely routine and as normal as it should be in the real world, and some early scenes where neighborhood assholes were misgendering Rose, it's clear this isn't a world where they're ignoring that transphobia exists. It does, but normal good parents will support their kids. -

The biggest lesson I learned from #TheStarBeast is that, like S3 of #Picard and *gestures widely at the #MandoVerse* when you get fan service right, it really fucking works
