Went to see Robyn Hitchcock last night at The Grey Eagle in Asheville. The setlist isn't up on SetlistFM yet, but it's pretty close if not identical to the set he played the night before in Carrboro.
Emma Swift opened the show, did some of her own songs and a cover of Bob Dylan's "Visions of Johanna", as well as a cover of "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Prince/Sinead O'Connor. (Prince may have written the song, but IMO O'Connor owns that song, and her cover was much closer to O'Connor's version.) She and Robyn obviously share a love of Dylan.
This is, I think, the fourth time I've seen Robyn with a full band. Previously saw him with The Egyptians opening for R.E.M. in 1989 (St. Louis), with the Venus Three in ~2006 (Seattle), and with Yo La Tengo doing "Black Snake Diamond Role" in its entirety in 2017 in NYC. Have also seen him a few times doing solo/acoustic shows. TBH I've lost track of how many of those I've seen; three, I think.
Last night's show was fantastic; the band was tight and they leaned into some extended jams on several of the songs. I think the set was a bit over two hours, but I lost track of time really.
Funny thing about the SetlistFM stats: it counts songs as "covers" even when it was by "Robyn Hitchcock and The Egyptians" or "The Soft Boys" (his first band). I don't quite count those as covers, but he also did some excellent covers of songs by Dylan, Pink Floyd/Syd Barrett, Velvet Underground, and The Beatles.
Looks like he has one more show in the U.S., on June 26 in Lawrence KS. If you happen to be nearby, you should definitely check it out. Then he's on to a bunch of dates in England and other countries in Europe starting in September. #Music #RobynHitchcock #TheSoftBoys

I’ve been going to see Robyn Hitchcock since he showed up on my campus freshman year. 4+ decades later at 73 he still blows me away every single time I see him. As with so many musicians I’ve gone to see loyally over the run of their careers, I am so grateful I’ve been able to be present and experience their magic live.
