Een Etruskische hydra
Held met hydra (Antikensammlung, München)Hierboven ziet u een deel van een amfoor die ooit is gevonden in de Etruskische stad Vulci. Veel aardewerk dat in het antieke Etrurië is gevonden, is geïmporteerd uit Griekenland, maar dit is een lokaal product, rond 520 v.Chr. gemaakt door de zogeheten Tityos-schilder. De vaas is tegenwoordig te bewonderen in de prachtige Antikensammlung aan de Königsplatz in München.
Hydra
Maar wat stelt het voor? Rechts herkennen we een veelkoppig fabeldier, dat we zonder veel problemen kunnen identificeren met een hydra. Dat was een vervelende waterslang, die zich nogal slecht liet bestrijden doordat voor elke afgehakte kop meer dan één kop terug aangroeide. Bovendien was een van de koppen onsterfelijk. De halfgod Herakles schakelde het ondier gelukkig uit door niet alleen de koppen af te hakken, maar de wond ook dicht te schroeien voor nieuwe koppen konden opsteken. Tot slot hakte hij de onsterfelijke kop af, en begroef die. Die moet dus nog ergens in Griekenland liggen.
Een mooi verhaal, maar evident niet wat de Tityos-schilder heeft afgebeeld. Dit is Herakles niet. Die draagt over zijn hoofd namelijk een leeuwenpels. Bovendien is hij herkenbaar aan pijl en boog of knots; bovenstaande drakendoder heeft in de rechterhand – voor u en mij links – echter een boomtak vast en houdt met de andere hand een hond (??) voor het twaalfkoppige gedrocht. Je zou geneigd zijn een verhaal erbij te verzinnen waarin een held een monster een lekker hapje voorhoudt, om het vervolgens, als het beest zich daaraan te goed wil doen, de koppen in te slaan met de boomtak.
Leentjebuur
Misschien is dat inderdaad de bijbehorende mythe. Misschien ook niet. Het is in elk geval geen Herakles, maar een ons onbekende Etruskische held.
Dat de tegenstander van de ene held tevens werd verslagen door een andere held, is overigens niet vreemd. Theseus en Herakles hebben bijvoorbeeld allebei gestreden tegen de Amazones en overwonnen ook allebei een monsterlijke ever. Dus dat een Etruskische held Herakles’ hydra doodde, is allerminst opvallend. Maar het is frustrerend dat we de naam van de Etruskische held niet kennen.
