Also known as The Brotherhood of the Seven Rays.
They were a group of rapturists or a UFO religion in the mid-20th century Midwestern United States. The Seekers met in a nondenominational church. The group was originally organized in 1953 by Charles Laughead.
They were led by Dorothy Martin (a.k.a. Sister Thedra) from the Chicago area, who believed a UFO would save them from a disaster on December 21, 1954. They’re believed to have been the earliest UFO religion.
Martin told her followers that the United States was going to be destroyed by a massive earthquake & a huge tidal wave on December 21, 1954. This was due to telepathic messages that she claimed to have gotten from aliens.
She called the aliens the Guardians & said they came from a planet called Clarion. Believers would be saved from destruction by flying saucers that would take them to Clarion.
The Seekers were the subject of the book When Prophecy Fails by Leon Festinger, in which Laughead was given the fake name of Dr. Armstrong & Martin the name of Marian Keech. Festinger infiltrated the Seekers to study their cognitive reactions & coping mechanisms when their beliefs failed, a thought process dissonance.
When the UFO didn’t come, a majority of members became convinced it would arrive on Christmas Eve, at which time their 2nd disappointment produced even greater dissonance.

It was used as the title song for the 1966 British romantic comedy film #GeorgyGirl. #TomSpringfield, who had written "I'll Never Find Another You" for the Seekers, composed the music and #JimDale supplied the lyrics. The song is heard at both the beginning and end of the film, with markedly different lyrics (and with different lyrics again from those in the commercially released version).
