  1. This is pretty cool! TY to @clew for making me aware of SOIL!

    Transforming #Waste into Resources

#SOIL is combatting the sanitation crisis in #Haiti by expanding access to dignified and safely managed #sanitation.

"Since 2006, SOIL has been transforming wastes into resources in Haiti. By offering a container based toilet and #composting waste treatment, SOIL is working to create a revolutionary social business model for providing access to safe, dignified sanitation that produces rich, #OrganicCompost as a natural resource for Haiti's badly depleted soils, while also creating economic opportunities in some of the world's most under-resourced communities.

"Today, more than 4,300 households rely on SOIL’s #EkoLakay container-based sanitation service. Through #EcologicalSanitation and #thermophilic composting, SOIL safely transforms more than 1,300 metric tons of waste into #AgriculturalGrade #compost annually while mitigating over 3,000 metric tons of #CO2e each year through aerobic waste treatment processes."

  2. The greater #celandine (#Chelidonium #majus) prefers #nitrogenrich #soils and tends to be #thermophilic. In Germany, it grows in #parks and along roadsides. #Seeddispersal occurs via #myrmecochory; #ants are #attracted by means of a #lure (an #elaiosome). In the case of C. majus, this takes the form of a fleshy outgrowth (a #caruncle).

  3. A new bacterial species from a hydrothermal vent throws light on microbial evolution phys.org/news/2023-11-bacteria paper: microbiologyresearch.org/conte

"The #discovery of a #mesophilic (adapted to moderate temperatures) #Hydrogenimonas species was unexpected. The strain likely provides us with the opportunity to investigate their evolutionary transition from a #thermophilic to a mesophilic and from an #autotrophic (capable of creating organic compounds) to a #heterotrophic (consumes #autotrophs) lifestyle"

  4. Originally only in southwest #Germany, now also in #Berlin and around my house and inside my living room. The #hoary #footman #Eilema #caniola (#Erebidae, #Lepidoptera) is a #moth that is particularly #thermophilic. Caterpillars feed mainly on #lichens.
The gradual #spread of the moth within Germany is partly well documented. In 2014 it was detected in Lower #Saxony. From 2017 in Berlin--Staaken.
