Det var i min trΓ₯nga studentlΓ€genhet i BorΓ₯s som vi bΓ₯da satt framfΓΆr min stereo fΓΆr att primΓ€rt lyssna pΓ₯ ett fΓΆrhandsexemplar av The Embassys efterlΓ€ngtade andra album. Efter att extasen hade lagt sig vΓ€xlade han till en lΓ₯t pΓ₯ en brΓ€nd CD-skiva som kom till att bli en tΓ€mligen avgΓΆrande upptΓ€ckt som formade mitt framtida musiklyssnande. Marcus var (och Γ€r fΓΆrmodligen fortfarande, jag vet inte, ty jag har inte trΓ€ffat honom pΓ₯ ΓΆver tio Γ₯r) en vΓ€ldigt trendkΓ€nslig, pΓ₯lΓ€st och passionerad person som hade lΓ₯ngt bΓ€ttre koll Γ€n jag sjΓ€lv pΓ₯ den hetaste och hippaste nya svartheten. Och gΓ₯r det att bli hippare Γ€n den senaste nya svartheten frΓ₯n New York? Troligen inte. ”Crush the Liberation”, en weird liten danstingest med ett utklippt Instant Funk-beat placerad under en smittande basgΓ₯ng och en distad kvinnorΓΆst som gormar slagord, lΓ€t inte som mycket annat jag hade hΓΆrt tidigare.

    Det ena tog mig till det andra, och plΓΆtsligt sΓ₯g jag genom mitt informationsletande pΓ₯ internet att spΓ₯ren ledde mig till det dΓ€ra nya svarta frΓ₯n ett par Γ₯r tidigare: punkfunken. The Rapture. Jag hade ju sett och uppskattat deras livespelning i MalmΓΆ pΓ₯ den kortlivade Acceleratorfestivalen (som vΓ€l idag bytt skepnad till Way Out West, typ?). Deras neddykning i Gang of Four, Public Image Ltd., Big Star och regelrΓ€tt techno pΓ₯ albumet ”Echoes” lΓ₯ter som en ingredienslista som inte bΓΆr gΓ₯ att kombinera ΓΆverhuvudtaget, men som pΓ₯ ett mΓ€rkligt sΓ€tt funkar – ungefΓ€r pΓ₯ samma vis som Primal Screams underliga kombination av rock och house pΓ₯ ”Screamadelica” gΓΆr det. Limmet som hΓΆll ihop ”Echoes” stavas DFA, vilka var skivbolagsΓ€garna, producenterna och DJ-duon Tim Goldsworthy och James Murphy. Vid sidan om den klassiska Saturday Night Live-sketchen om Blue Γ–yster Cults produktionsgnabb sΓ₯ Γ€r det Γ€r troligen dessa herrars fΓΆrtjΓ€nst att utskΓ€llda koklockan fick en nytΓ€ndning inom dansmusiken pΓ₯ 00-talet. PΓ₯ ”Echoes” Γ€r den ymnigt fΓΆrekommande, inte minst i den centrala singeln ”House of Jealous Lovers” (med sin fortfarande ofΓΆrskΓ€mt snygga musikvideo).

    Mer koklockor Γ₯terfinns (till Bruce Dickinsons stora glΓ€dje) i James Murphys framgΓ₯ngsrika katalog med sitt husband LCD Soundsystem. Det som inleds 2002 med medelΓ₯lderskrisandets anthem ”Losing My Edge” utvecklas successivt frΓ₯n ett enmansprojekt till ett arenaband med lika delar Talking Heads-polyrytmik, aciddisco och Robert Fripp-ylande gitarrock under drygt tio Γ₯rs tid. Mycket av DFAs katalog kommer att centreras kring detta band, dess medlemmar och deras vΓ€nner. I gruppen hittas bl.a. Nancy Whang pΓ₯ keyboards och piano som Γ€ven gΓΆr dansmusik i The Juan Maclean, trummismonstret Pat Mahoney som Γ€ven gΓΆr musik i Museum of Love, gitarristen Al Doyle som spelar i Hot Chip, tidigare !!!-basisten Tyler Pope som lagt ovΓ€rderliga funkgrooves pΓ₯ Hercules & Love Affair, The Crystal Ark m.fl., GavilΓ‘n Rayna Russom (tidigare Gavin Russom) som Murphy fΓΆrst anlitade som synthesizerreparatΓΆr men som blev fullvΓ€rdig medlem efter att ha slΓ€ppt utmΓ€rkt ambienttechno och snorfunky konstdisco med Delia Gonzalez, brusigt electromangel som Black Meteoric Star samt det ovan nΓ€mnda The Crystal Ark. Det rΓ₯der onekligen ingen brist pΓ₯ talang i denna uppsΓ€ttning.

    Vid sidan om husbanden gav bolaget ut en rad av tolvtumssinglar av elektronisk karaktΓ€r, och gΓ€rna med en touch av weird. De besatt ofta en skevhet som pΓ₯minde om postpunkens ena ben i den konstakademiska vΓ€rlden och andra ben i moshpiten. DΓ€ri lΓ₯g lockelsen fΓΆr mig. Γ„ven om jag ocksΓ₯ finner njutning i den cleanaste av stΓ€msΓ₯ngsfylld solskenspop och den mest vΓ€lpolerade Nile Rodgers-discon sΓ₯ Γ€r jag i grund och botten Γ€ndΓ₯ en indiekid som vuxit upp med skrΓ₯lande punk och falsksjungande gitarrplink. FΓΆr mig Γ€r det Γ€r – hΓ₯ll i er, fΓΆr nu kommer en blodigt sΓΆnderslagen klyscha – i imperfektionerna som de mest intressanta uttrycken uppstΓ₯r. Det Γ€r skavankerna i t.ex. Ndfs tio minuter lΓ₯nga och helt odansbara danstrans, i Jee Days nΓ€rmast psykedeliska houseupplevelse med repetitiva sΓ₯ngstrofer som glider ur sin takt, i Invisible Conga Peoples beslut att pitcha ner sin sΓ₯ngerskas rΓΆst till nΓ₯got suggestivt, i Shit Robots stΓΆrtdykande tvΓ₯-minuter-tills-domedagenhouse och i PlanningToRocks originella genderbenderkonsthouse som jag kΓ€nner tron pΓ₯ skaparglΓ€djens helande kraft – en motpol till urvattnad hjΓ€rta-och-smΓ€rta-lyrik levererad av dockfigurer frammejslade av en fabrik styrd av dollargrinande kostymer. Det Γ€r ocksΓ₯ inspelade DJ-sets som James Murphys och Pat Mahoneys ”FabricLive. 36” som fΓ₯r mig att bΓ€ttre fΓΆrstΓ₯ deras vΓ€rldsbild via fΓ₯nigt roliga dansgrooves frΓ₯n Baby Oliver och Junior Byron, som fΓ₯r mig att upptΓ€cka New York-labeln ZE Records och som fΓ₯r mig att kolla upp det obskyra Peter Gordon-sidoprojektet Justine and The Victorian Punks. ”A Subtle Discolation Of The Norm” Γ€r undertiteln pΓ₯ den 42 Γ₯r gamla ZE-samlingen ”Mutant Disco”, vilket onekligen kΓ€nns som en programfΓΆrklaring som gΓ₯tt i arv till DFA-familjen.

    Min absoluta DFA-favorit som utan tvekan ska med till den ΓΆde ΓΆn Γ€r ett album jag fick importera tvΓ₯ gΓ₯nger frΓ₯n staterna: fΓΆrst i en limited edition-utgΓ₯va, sedan i en Γ€nnu mer limiterad white label-press pΓ₯ rosa vinyl i blott 200 exemplar. Γ„r man en idiot sΓ₯ Γ€r man. Skivan jag pratar om Γ€r brittiska Factory Floors sjΓ€lvbetitlade album frΓ₯n 2013 – ett album som fΓ₯ verkar bry sig nΓ€mnvΓ€rt om men som jag nog hΓ₯ller som 2010-talet kanske bΓ€sta ΓΆverhuvudtaget. Detta album Γ€r ett perfekt destillat av DFAs DNA: stenhΓ₯rd och hypnotisk technodans med massor av smattrande percussion, okonventionella lΓ₯tstrukturer med pratsΓ₯ng som nav och en perfekt ljudbild kantad av rostigt industrihummande. FΓΆrvΓ€nta er det ofΓΆrvΓ€ntade (och en metallisk blodsmak i munnen).

    NΓ€r LCD Soundsystem frΓ₯n ingenstans meddelade att de skulle lΓ€gga ner och avsluta med ett antal konsertnΓ€tter pΓ₯ Madison Square Garden 2011 sΓ₯ fΓΆljde jag livestreamen frΓ₯n den sista spelningen och livekommenterade pΓ₯ pippisajten under morgontimmarna. Det var ett magnifikt farvΓ€l som, vill jag minnas, pΓ₯gick i ΓΆver fyra timmar. Bandet rev av i princip allt bra i sin sΓ₯ngbok, inklusive sina covers pΓ₯ Harry Nilssons ”Jump Into the Fire” och Alan Vegas ”Bye Bye Bayou”. Det var en vacker stund att se pΓ₯ nΓ€r gΓΆteborgssolen gick upp medan ”New York, I Love You but You’re Bringing Me Down” avslutade konserten pΓ₯ andra sidan Atlanten. Allt fΓΆrevigades pΓ₯ film som lanserades sedan som den alldeles utmΓ€rkta ”Shut Up and Play the Hits”. Dess slutbild pΓ₯ ett grΓ₯tande fan som tomt stirrar in i kameran likt Antoine Doinel i Francois Truffauts ”De 400 slagen” Γ€r fantastisk, och om inte denna person startade ett eget rockband efterΓ₯t sΓ₯ har nΓ₯got uppenbarligen gΓ₯tt fel i vΓ€rlden.

    Efter att LCD Soundsystem gick i graven hade jag stora fΓΆrhoppningar att duon Holy Ghost! skulle bli DFAs nΓ€sta stora grej. Potentialen efter superba tidigare remixarbeten Γ₯t Panthers och Curses! var astronomisk i min vΓ€rld. De lΓ€t som om soundtracket till Walter Hills ”The Warriors” hade vaknat ur sitt koma pΓ₯ Coney Island. Trummorna och dess hi-hatrasslande var musikens kroppspulsΓ₯der. Likt Pat Mahoney Γ€r Nic Millhiser i Holy Ghost! helt otrolig maskin bakom pukorna, vilket han senare ocksΓ₯ fΓ₯r demonstrera pΓ₯ ett par av The Juan Macleans portalverk. Holy Ghost!s debutalbum Γ€r verkligen inte dΓ₯ligt – den stΓΆrsta fjΓ€dern i hatten Γ€r att de lyckades fΓ₯ silverskΓ€gget Michael MacDonald att sjunga refrΓ€ngen pΓ₯ skivans avslutande funkburgare – men helheten blir tyvΓ€rr lite fΓΆr poppigt nΓ€r jag hade fΓΆrvΓ€ntat mig mer av den gula tunnelbanelinjens smuts och svΓ€rta. Samma resa gΓΆr Γ€ven pΓ₯ The Juan Maclean pΓ₯ de album som fΓΆljde det som jag introducerades fΓΆr i studentlΓ€genheten i BorΓ₯s. NΓ€r jag idag lyssnar igenom deras diskografi blir det tydligare att deras ΓΆvergΓ₯ng till mer traditionell lΓ₯tskrivarstruktur och stjΓ€rnstrΓΆsslande ΓΆver Nancy Whang tyvΓ€rr har gjort dem till ett trΓ₯kigare, mer generiskt band Γ€n det som inledde sitt artisteri med en tio minuter lΓ₯ng fejkliveinspelad singel med pratsΓ₯ngselectro. NΓ₯got Γ₯r efter dessa utsvΓ€vningar hΓ€nder nΓ₯got mΓ€rkligt. LCD Soundsystem vΓ€rmer upp sig sjΓ€lva i mikrovΓ₯gsugnen blott sex Γ₯r efter ”det stora farvΓ€let”, vilket i mina ΓΆgon Γ€r ett svek mot fansen och ett nersolkande av ett nΓ€rmast perfekt legacy. Jag Γ€lskar dig, James, men du gΓΆr mig besviken. Att albumet som fΓΆljde, ”American Dream”, var en helt superb Γ₯terkomst Γ€r en annan sak… och en situation som jag fortfarande har lite svΓ₯rt att tampas och bli sams med. PΓ₯ albumet framkommer ocksΓ₯ att forna DFA-parhΓ€sten Tim Goldsworthy har kickats efter interna brΓ₯k (vilket ”How Do You Sleep?” handlar om) men idag kan man kan fortfarande hitta honom pΓ₯ annat hΓ₯ll, sittandes i remixstolen som Thee Loving Hand. Hans makalΓΆsa hΓ€nder har ju f.ΓΆ. smekt som den ΓΆmmaste av Γ€lskare pΓ₯ en av mina favoritsinglar de senaste Γ₯ren.

    DFA har dock, vilket man nΓ€stan kan tro om man lΓ€ser min redogΓΆrelse och minnesbilder, inte givit upp med att vara weird. Nix pix, lΓ₯ngt ifrΓ₯n. Bara i Γ₯r har man slΓ€ppt album av Jjulius och Loopsel frΓ₯n GΓΆteborg, akter som mer pekar mot experimentell, dubbig postpunk i Young Marble Giants-skolan Γ€n dunkadunka. SΓ₯ sluta aldrig att gΓ₯ emot strΓΆmmen, DFA!
