The Power by Naomi Alderman is extremely good, I'm pretty sure it will become a SF classic, and I'm kinda surprise it isn't already (or maybe it is and I'm just not in touch with what the classics are anymore).
It takes place in our contemporary world, and women suddenly get "the power", a physical ability to send electric shocks they can modulate to the point of incapacitating or even killing someone. It's told a bit in a documentary way, focusing on 4 characters : a politician, a journalist, a gang member and cult leader.
It's a thriller, feminist essay, social commentary, and sociology lesson all packed in one, and I don't think I can recommend it enough, go read it!

这部剧刚出的时候看了两集弃了，因为不喜欢剧集有点急赤白脸的表达方式，没想到错过了呈现面向如此广的一部女性主义作品，要考虑重新捡起来补了
影片提到原作以 #GamerGate #玩家门 为参考，但很多元素是今天仍在重复上演的，比如各种传播极端厌女言论的incel播客、tiktok账号，现在是男性沙文主义笼络年轻白男的主要阵地，尤其是在去年的大选中施加了巨大影响力甚至剧集也没有忽略对 #性别本质主义 的观察和批判，在父权浸淫下站起来的女权主义者必然也存在复刻了父权逻辑的分支（明点 #基进女权），以暴制暴地在女权旗帜下再现更换了主导性别的单一性别权力结构，可不就是当下打着各种「全女空间」旗号不断割席提纯的小圈子
这也引出了 #预兆性政治 #prefigurativepolitics 的重要意义，它指出行动本身和行动的组织原则，就是塑造未来社会样貌的力量，以暴力手段呼唤来的只可能是暴力而非和平，以色列就是最直接的例子

Habe gestern die Serie „Die Gabe“ („The Power“, Amazon Prime) zu Ende geschaut. Die zeigt anschaulich den Zerfall des Patriarchats: Egal ob Religion, Diktatur oder Familienstruktur - alle bekannten und scheinbar naturgegebenen Hierarchien werden in Frage gestellt.
Wie dabei bisher (mehr oder weniger) mächtige Männer auf die evolutionäre Veränderung von Mädchen und Frauen zum „starken Geschlecht“ mit Verunsicherung, Abwehr und Gewalt reagieren, ist eindrucksvoll hilflos (und lässt sich von hier aus leicht auf andere - ebenfalls nur scheinbar naturgegebene - Privilegien übertragen). In vielen kleinen Szenen werden die vertauschten Rollen gezeigt, das ist irritierend und gleichzeitig Augen öffnend.

Can't vouch for the whole thing, but I've been catching glimpses of the show #ThePower here and there, and it's a really interesting premise. Many #women start developing power to wield electricity, and that upends #gender power dynamics and #patriarchy around the world.

Book 21: "#ThePower" by #NaomiAlderman.
Cool premise that the author doesn't carry all the way through. The story unfolds through several POV characters, but there's always the one (or more) that you're bored with, or there's a boring stretch for one you do like. So I often felt unsatisfied.
The conceit that the book itself is written by a man in a matriarchal world is fascinating. It only bookends the novel with "research" interspersed—I wished there was more.

I apparently have conflicted feelings on trans and intersex rep in TV. (Note, I am trans, but I am not intersex that I am aware of)
I've been watching a show called The Power, in which, teen and young adult cis women have started to develop an organ that lets them channel electricity.
As I've been watching it, I have wondered how the trans and intersex folk of the world fit in to the story. There has been a trans woman, but as she is older, she was beyond the age of developing the organ, and so they never really explored how it might work for her. And I found myself thinking they had chickened out.
And then in the latest episode, they had an intersex guy who had developed the gland, with the assumption being, he had done so because he has increased levels of estrogen. And I found myself thinking that he likely only exists in the story as a gimmick.
But that doesn't really leave them anywhere to go does it? I'm annoyed when they don't explore it, and annoyed when they do! Perhaps it would be different if either of them were main characters, but I get the feeling it wouldn't...
I don't actually know how I wanted the show to handle the topic, but it feels like they've missed the mark...

Das war die Szene, die mir heute die Tränen in die Augen getrieben hat.
Natürlich ist das für mich alles nichts Neues, aber ich find’s furchtbar, dass das im Jahr 2023 unsere Science-Fiction-Utopien sind.
Und gleichzeitig führt es hoffentlich noch ein paar mehr Typen wie mir vor Augen, wie wichtig und wie wertvoll jeder noch so kleine Schritt dahin ist.

Uff, die aktuelle Folge #ThePower (bzw. #DieGabe im Deutschen) hat mich mitgenommen.
Worum geht’s? Ganz einfach: Was wäre, wenn Frauen auf der ganzen Welt auf einmal die Fähigkeit bekämen, Blitze aus ihren Fingern zu verschießen, mit Intensitäten zwischen „leicht kribbelnd“ bis „tödlich“? Was macht das mit den Frauen? Was macht das Patriarchat?
Eine feministische Science-Fiction-Serie in der Gegenwart, basierend auf der Buchvorlage von Naomi Alderman. Empfehlung!
