  1. The Pope’s Exorcist turns history into excuse-making, dressing institutional guilt up as demonic influence. The Exorcism can’t decide if it wants to honor or parasitize its legacy. The Ritual hides behind “documentation” while recycling every tired trope in the book.

  6. Just sat down to watch #ThePopesExorcist on Netflix. I thought the theme matched today's weather...

There have been few things recently that have made me giggle like Russell Crow on a Vespa, saying "Cuckoo!" with an Italian accent to make the nuns laugh. Other than that, this exorcism horror is a solid flick. Nothing new here, but it's fun, delightfully dry, campy, features great possession scenes and a main character who, for me, would be welcome to go on more (1999?) adventures, which he most likely will.

  8. Increasingly, I find myself thinking that after 50 years, the clearest remaining way to make a really entertaining exorcism movie is to just lean in to how cliched all of the tropes have become and have fun with it.

And yes, what I am saying is: The Pope's Exorcist is the way.

  9. I guess #ThePopesExorcist was supposed to be the ultimate exorcism film, but like all work dealing with evil, I think more mystery is key. This movie overwhelms with special effects, extensive backstories, papal intrigue, a far-fetched premise, etc. It would have been interesting to have Crowe being called out of exorcist retirement in a post-belief-in-evil-era by some random occurrence of a manifestation in a small town, abroad or the US. I think with portrayals of evil, less is more.

  10. Tonight's movie. I have never seen it before but it feels so familiar that I'm wondering if it was based on a book I read years ago. #thepopesexorcist #horrormovies #netflix #currentlywatching

  11. A different sort of back story to this exorcism movie helped a lot. Otherwise, it would have been just , meh.. Worth the watch? Sure!

  12. The Amorth Cinematic Universe is gonna be wild, y'all. My ★★½ review of The Pope's Exorcist (2023) on Letterboxd: boxd.it/49035h #ThePopesExorcist #PopesExorcist #Horror #Letterboxd

  13. #DailyStream: no, the Devil did not make them do it. Alex Gibney’s excoriating 2012 doc #MeaMaximaCulpa, about the coverup of child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, is a necessary smack at #ThePopesExorcist. @hbomax US, @AppleTV UK.

  14. More of the same old religious-horror hoohah, plus Russell Crowe hamming it up, complete with terrible Italian accent. Its only twist on the usual exorcist-movie nonsense is genuinely pretty appalling. My review of #ThePopesExorcist: flickfilosopher.com/2023/04/th [UK cinemas now, US Friday]
