  1. #PatLeahy is political ed of The #IrishTimes. His 1st paid job was at #ThePhoenix. So can Pat explain its demise? archive.is/CILA6

Pat says The Phoenix was redundant. It had exposed corruption, but tribunals & laws ended corruption.

Bollix! The Galway Tent ended. In came mega-scandals of neoliberalism. In 2013, the FG-Lab govt handed Irish housing to vulture funds, & tried privatising water. More muck than ever. But now its neoliberal muck, and the Irish Times is neoliberal. 🤮

  6. Heartbroken by closure of satirical/investigative magazine The Phoenix. After 42 years, it is a huge loss to Irish journalism, politics and culture.

#PhoenixMagazine was often compared to #PrivateEye. It had a similar mix of satire & investigation, but #ThePhoenix was more serious and was spared the Eye's English public school boy humour.

  8. It makes me very happy that my kids love #TheBeano and #ThePhoenix. It’s also an incredible achievement to keep real British/Scottish comics for kids going in the face of declining sales and competition from rubbish product tie ins with plastic tat on the cover.

The Beano is 85 years old! I really didn’t think my kids would be reading the Bash Street Kids, Calamity James, the Numskulls and Bananaman in 2024.

  10. #introduction 2.0: hello! I’m Neill Cameron, I write and draw comics and books, mostly for kids - Mega Robo Bros, Freddy Vs School, How To Make Awesome Comics - and lots of stuff for the brilliant UK weekly comic The Phoenix. I run monthly comics club groups for kids and teenagers at the Story Museum in Oxford. I like robots and dinosaurs and such!
