Due to Vera Drew having work with the influential comedy duo Tim & Eric she was able to get popular comedians like Bob Odenkirk, Maria Bamford and Tim Heidecker to voice various characters in the “The People’s Joker” (2022)

For obvious reasons “The People’s Joker” (2022) was built on legal thin ice even with creator Vera Drew & Co. working with lawyers throughout the filmmaking process. This led to the film being pulled from the Toronto International Film Festival the day after it premiered. It would spend 2yrs in legal limbo until it would gain official theatrical release.

“The People’s Joker” (2022) was created using a a crowdfunded budget of $25K AND crowdsourced artwork. More than 100 artists contributed to backdrops, wardrobe, set design and character animation.

#AMFF2025 | #ThePeoplesJoker destaca como una peculiar historia sobre la identidad trans, pero es completamente fallida se mire por donde se mire. Una buena idea ejecutada de la peor manera imaginable. En #Filmin.

Vera Drew won the award for Breakthrough Director at the Gotham Awards on Monday evening!
In celebration, here's the review I wrote of her brilliant film The People's Joker back in September.

It really seems like “you can’t be funny anymore” was just an excuse for people who haven’t been funny in years to stop even pretending to try.
Meanwhile, filmmakers like Vera Drew took that premise literally and made the funniest film I’ve seen in years on a shoestring budget during COVID. #ThePeoplesJoker

I don't think you can understand my excitement over The People's Joker getting a VHS release. A pan and scan release, implying it's actually made for 4:3 and CRT TVs. That was edited by the director even, something that I don't know ever happened for mainstream movies.
This is going to be SUCH a special movie and I 100% already got my preorder in!

Went to see a screening of the "The People's Joker" and it is SOOO GOOD! Vera Drew is amazing and I love her so much. She's hilarious and we have the same influences to our humor (Tim and Eric, Eric Andre, David Libe Hart, etc)
She did a Q&A and people asked such amazing questions afterwards, like very deep questions. The movie was essentially about her life and was deeply personal so that goes along with it. The movie almost didn't get made...
For those of you who aren't aware what the movie is about, it is essentially a parody of the Batman movies. Except it also tells her story in parallel of how she discovered who she was and the struggles throughout her childhood with her parents.
I related a lot and it was so refreshing to finally see a movie purely from the trans and queer perspective.

Last night was the first night of the Salem Horror Fest, and thanks to a last-minute schedule change, they wound up screening The People's Joker. What a movie! It felt like I was back in high school watching Newgrounds and Adult Swim with its style and sense of humor, a riotous and surprisingly deep sendup of superheroes, standup/sketch comedy, growing up queer, and a whole lot more. If it plays near you, check it out.

#thepeoplesjoker lived up to being a brilliant and creative satire, but what I didn’t expect going in was that it would be the funniest movie I’ve seen in years. I may have to go back and watch it again this week just because I missed dialogue because the whole theater was roaring with laughter so often. Definitely catch it this and next week if you’re lucky enough to live in a city that’s screening it!

So whaddaya know -- #ThePeoplesJoker , which I saw earlier, isn't just a fair use cause celebre by any means. In fact right now it's my #film of the year easy -- a swirl of approaches around a central story of trans identity that's deeply moving, funny as hell and builds up to a brilliant ending.
