Evolution has given rise to the #diversity of life on Earth, but it can also cause species #extinctions. While major extinction events are usually associated with external drivers, in this study, we show mechanistically how evolution can trigger abrupt extinction avalanches in #EcologicalNetworks without any environmental change.

This one has been in the making for more than 5 years. What started as a rather small side project in the form of a cosupervised MSc thesis turned into a longterm collaboration. I have to say it was totally worth the ride but right now I'm just glad it's finally off my desk so I can focus on other "side projects"... 😜

Meet our group members! We continue with our PhD candidates. Today with the wonderful Rana Shojaei.
"Hi, I'm Rana! I studied physics for both my bachelor's and master's degree. My favorite subjects were statistical physics and quantum mechanics. In my thesis I studied the evolution of social networks by introducing a dynamical model."
Rana is our expert in counting things. What sounds easy at first proves to be an interesting challenge. She uses generating functions to analyze the structural diversity of molecules in dissolved organic matter (DOM) and of unlabeled graphs.

The article shows an ecological model of plant polinator network and how dynamical stability depends on network properties.

We study structure-stability relations in #MultiplexNetworks , using #tree-#liana interaction #networks from #Ghana as inspiration. We show that the stabilising effect of #modularity heavily depends on intra-guild interactions and is largest in case of intra-guild facilitation, highlighting the need to study how patterns in inter- and intraguild interactions jointly affect #EcosystemStability.
Most of my team members are currently busy preparing their #conference talks for the #MMEE2026 in Cork (Mathematical Models in #Ecology and #Evolution) and I'm such a proud PI. They have SO MUCH super fascinating stuff in the pipeline! 🤩

Certain tree species, such as the Pyrenean oak, function as ecological mediators by altering the soil beneath them to balance competition between rival plant species. This natural mediation prevents dominant plants from driving weaker competitors to extinction.

Rapid evolution in response to changing environmental conditions is often considered beneficial, as it can help species to persist in changing environments. However, evolution can also be detrimental. 1st author Simon Leoz examines eco-evolutionary dynamics of competitive systems and finds a case of evolutionary murder, where rapid evolution of one species drives another one towards extinction.

„Many weak and few strong links“ seems to be a common pattern in many ecological networks. 1st author Franziska Koch shows that this pattern can enable stabilising effects of network structure, using competitive hierarchies as a case study. We argue that skewed link strength distributions should hence receive more attention, especially in studies based on #RandomMatrixTheory.
