The seminal book "Anti Intellectualism ln American Life" (1963 - Hofstadter) does a great job of explaining the peculiar "rugged individualism" of American religion, "Lay preachers' and the overall resentment of expertise in all fields. This softens the ground for conspiracy, ignorance, arrogance, and all the 'isms'.
