These writers should meet my wife, her family and friends, or any of the Serbian people who paid heavily for their opposition to Milosevic's ultra-nationalist agenda.People who took to the streets and marched in protest against a dictator whose secret police were kicking down doors and dragging people off to deep, dark places.
I've been involved in direct action politics, but in truth, never to the point of putting my life on the line.

Feeling a bit of trepidation about starting the next John Connolly Charlie Parker mystery, The Nameless Ones.According to the dust-jacket, this book sees our protagonist hunting five Serbian men. You guessed it, "war criminals". Gangsters.
According to western fiction, if you're Serbian, you must be a war criminal. Or at the very least a violent gangster. That's the only way Serbs can be portrayed these days.
