In August 1976, The Modern Lovers' self-titled debut was released.
Consisting of demo-material from 1971/72, they sounded like nothing else, an antithesis to the commercialised rock formula, stripped down to its fragile core.
Revelling "in the rawness, both of the emotions in their songs and of the technique with which they played them, was to come up against a bucketload of reality", though, "and that was not what these audiences wanted".
