One of my very favourite sites for today's #StandingStoneSunday
Moel ty Uchaf ('Highest House on the Bare Hill') is a superb cairn circle set in an elevated position on the foothills of Y Berwyn mountain range above Llandrillo. It has extensive views across the Dee towards all the main mountain ranges of North Wales from Aranau to Y Carneddau.
This visit May 2012 on my way up to Cadair Bronwen.

Over to the west of Scotland and a trip in 2019 to visit Cromalt (west) chambered cairn near Ledmore for today's #StandingStoneSunday
The cairn material is mostly gone but the very nice orthostats of the chamber still remain. It's a little in the middle of nowhere nowadays but the walk here is good and the landscape open and pretty wonderful.

The mighty Old Keig recumbent stone circle in Aberdeenshire for today's #StandingStoneSunday
A huge recumbent, one of the largest of all, in a great setting with sweeping views across the landscape.
Visited April 2012 on a fantastic day of stone bothering.

A wonderful Aberdeenshire recumbent stone circle for today's #StandingStoneSunday
Cothiemuir Wood has one of the most elegant recumbent and flankers.

Maen Ceti or Arthur's Stone on the Cefn Bryn ridge, Gŵyr/Gower for today's #StandingStoneSunday
A Neolithic chambered tomb with a broken capstone, it has a lovely setting looking across Afon Llwchwr towards Llanelli and the mountains of South Wales.
This visit March 2012.

A trip to Yonder Bognie stone circle in Aberdeenshire back in 2013 for today's #StandingStoneSunday
View over the recumbent setting to a rainbow beyond. Some more photos on TMA

09/02/2025 - Now that the trees have gone.
The Slacks cairn just on the outskirts of Aberdeen. This large ancient bronze age cairn, 23m in diameter, was for so long hidden away in a wood. The recent felling has given it its view of the countryside back again.

The fabulous Harold's Stones at Trellech, Monmouthshire for today's #StandingStoneSunday
Plentiful folklore abounds, of the giant Jack o' Kent, the Devil, lost fiddlers and forgotten battles:

This visit November 2011.

The magnificent megalithic facade of Wayland's Smithy long barrow for today's #StandingStoneSunday
Folklore abounds, the most persistent being that if you leave your horse and some money here overnight, the Smith will re-shoe the horse ready for morning.
This visit October 2011.

A foggy day in South Wales for today's #StandingStoneSunday
Carn Llechart, a terrific cairn circle, its circle stones like flower petals. There's also a much earlier Neolithic chambered tomb and the hill has plentiful Bronze Age round cairns and ring cairns. Some visitors have reported paranormal goings-on and ghostly presences, but there was just pouring rain and fog on my visit (September 2011).
-
Some no-longer-standing stones for the last #StandingStoneSunday of 2024.
Arbor Low henge in Derbyshire, with its circle of fallen stones. This giant stone clockface was where it all started for me, the first megalithic site I visited back in 1997.
This visit September 2011.

A sunny circle from a few years back for #StandingStoneSunday
Situated in wonderful Glenshee, the lovely four poster stone circle - Grave Of Diarmid. The fine hill Ben Gulabin in the background.
-
South Wales, in the shadow of Bannau Brycheiniog, for today's #StandingStoneSunday
The Growing Stone, at Cwrt y Gollen (a former military base) between Crickhowell and Abergavenny. The stone is a red sandstone monolith around 12 feet tall, one of the most impressive menhirs in South Wales.
Visited August 2011. Portrait, may need a click.

12 years back and a sunny visit to Aikey Brae recumbent stone circle in Aberdeenshire for #StandingStoneSunday
The setting is lovely and the recumbent stone is massive (thought to weigh over 20 tons).

Another magic recumbent stone circle in Aberdeenshire for #StandingStoneSunday
The stones of Clune Wood RSC are still mostly there. The recumbent and two flankers are good. Situated in a clearing with a fine view south. It's a quiet place.

Wow, TMA website has had a new lick of paint. Going to take a bit of getting used to after all these years. It's bright. I love the map.

A day of Neolithic chambered tombs and artistic/delicious ice cream today. Two superb sites we haven't been to before (Cefn Isaf and Ystum Cegid), the latter cut short by cows-with-calves in the field, as well as a revisit to Caer Dyni after an ice-cream break.

Big Rain sweeping across North Wales today, so here's a sunnier day for #StandingStoneSunday
The wonderful Maen-y-Bardd (The Poet's Stone) dolmen, set high on a Carneddau hillside overlooking the beautiful Conwy valley.
"...did the song come first, or the stone? Was a bard buried here, or did the place make poets of its visitors?"
This first visit July 2011. Blog here:

For #StandingStoneSunday today, the fabulous Y Meini Hirion, sometimes called The Druid's Circle, above Penmaenmawr. Boasting a wonderful setting with views of both sea and Y Carneddau mountains, the circle is part of huge complex of stone circles, standing stones, burial chambers and cairns that encircle Tal y Fan.
One of the stones, The Deity Stone, is purported to batter anyone who swears or blasphemes at the site.
This visit in amazing weather, July 2011.

Going Neolithic for today's #StandingStoneSunday, or is it ProppedStoneSunday? Mulfra Quoit, the remains of a chambered tomb high on the West Penwith hills. The capstone has tipped and now leans against the orthostats; it's been like that for hundreds (or even thousands) of years.
Portrait with flowers, may need a click.

A photo from 2012 and a sunny trip to Spittal of Glenshee for #StandingStoneSunday.
This lovely standing stone behind the old kirk is said to be a meeting place for the fairy folk. It's a gateway to the big hills beyond.
-
Wonderful Drombeg stone circle for #StandingStoneSunday from a visit in 2019.
The most famous of all Irish recumbent stone circles. It meant a lot to finally make it here all the way from Aberdeenshire - the land of the RSC. Just a brilliant circle. A magic day. As happy as a spaceways gets.

A photo from a cold January visit, 12 years back, to Strichen recumbent stone circle for #StandingStoneSunday

The megalithic gem of Moel Tŷ Uchaf ('Bare Hill of the Highest House') for today's #StandingStoneSunday
A Bronze Age cairn circle in a fantastic location in the foothills of Y Berwynau mountains overlooking the Dee valley. On a clear day there are wonderful views of Eryri/Snowdonia, but on this visit views were reduced to a hundred metres or so by cold hill fog.
This visit February 2011. Blog here: https://www.themodernantiquarian.com/post/123269/over_the_misty_mountains_ii_foggy_boggy_berwyns_20_february_2011.html

Bonus stone for #StandingStoneSunday. Here's the Tibblestone in Gloucestershire being unearthed in 1948 by the owner of Cross Hands Garage (where the stone still stands today).
Photo and story also unearthed, from the Cheltenham Chronicle by Rhiannon on #TheModernAntiquarian.

A bit of urban prehistory for #StandingStoneSunday
This is Maen Huail in the lovely northeastern Wales town of Ruthin. In folklore it is said to have been the stone on which Arthur had Huail (brother of Gildas) beheaded. The version of the story on The Modern Antiquarian doesn't paint Arthur in a particularly chivalric light!
Visited January 2012, while walking Offa's Dyke Path.

Approaching sunset, Nine Maidens of Boskednan for #StandingStoneSunday
This circle, high on a ridge with panoramic views in all directions, is my favourite of all.
This visit November 2010, towards the end of a lovely autumn walk from St Just to Madron. Portrait, needs a click.

04/11/2023 - After sunset visit to Geallaig Hill. It has been a tough few weeks weather wise and life in general. It felt so good to be out walking again. This a fine hill with a good loop from Glen Gairn. We reached the top at pretty much sunset. Misty and a cold wind. We sat by the cairn, had our tea and waited for the dark. A few stars on the way back down but the mist and clouds didn't clear much. It was a chilly visit but just what we needed.

A revisit to one of my very favourite sites today, over 11 years since I last came:
Moel Ty Uchaf ('Bare hill of the highest house') is a Bronze Age cairn circle in the foothills of the Berwyn mountains. Views are extensive, particularly of Aranau and Arenig Fawr. This morning a temperature inversion filled the valley of Afon Dyfrdwy (that old snake they call the Dee) with cloud.
From here I headed up to Cadair Berwyn and Moel Sych.

#HappyNewYear! I only arrived here on Mastodon in Nov, part of the great #twittermigration. In that short time, I have connected with so many decent, interesting, bright & lovely people. Thx! 🙏
My husb & I met nearly 20yrs ago thru an interest in #Neolithic #AncientMonuments & #JulianCope's #TheModernAntiquarian, so for #StandingStoneSunday I'd like to share a #painting I made of the avenue at #Callanish.
(If you #FollowMe, I'll #followback, even if it's not #FollowBackFriday!)

As everyone's got comfy and it's dark outside, here are a couple of book posts for #StandingStoneSunday. These were my spirit guides, leading me so *very* far astray in the pre-internet world.
