I'm proud to present my #review of #kimStanleyRobinson 's #theMinistryForTheFuture : https://alxd.org/ministry-for-the-future-review.html#ministry-for-the-future-review
Be warned, it's a #longRead !
After three long years of struggling with the book and analyzing it I finally put my thoughts into a coherent blogpost. I never expected the Ministry to be #solarpunk , but I hoped that it will paint a future to look forward to.

The Messiah & The God-Emperor of Zurich
When I was reading #theMinistryForTheFuture I didn't actually register that the AI team of the Ministry proposed to create a new religion to support its shadow government.
It took away people's agency over their spirituality for purely political gain.
How is that different from the #Dune 's Bene Gesserit?

The Ministry for the Future - Kim Stanley Robinson
The book is a hopeful piece of climate change fiction. It follows the titular ministry created under the UN that struggles to reign in capitalism in order to avert disaster. One of many such ideas the ministry implements is creating a decentralized social media platform to grapple power back from tech giants (wow, what a wonderful idea). I haven't heard of many of the interesting ideas in the book and had to repeatedly write them down to research later. I don't agree with some of the compromises in the book but would still highly recommend. Apparently it was on Obama's 2020 book list, which I found wild as a major point in the book is climate activists repeatedly blowing up airplanes with rich people on them until the world switched to cleaner modes of travel
If you do end up liking the book, I'd also suggest the same author's Mars trilogy. I myself am starting the third book and enjoying the crossover of ideas

@bryan_edward A line that could’ve been pulled straight from #theministryforthefuture.

Having finished #kimStanleyRobinson 's #theMinistryForTheFuture , I thought that the original #bookCover didn't properly represent the educational value of this #clifi epic, so I'd like to propose a new one:

Another solution that appears in #TheMinistryForTheFuture looking close to actually happening. How cool is this #solar powered #airship - still a few years off being ready to launch but getting there.. https://solarairshipone.com/?page_id=1383&lang=en
-
The Veritasium on #Airships made me smile a lot. The role Airships play in #TheMinistryForTheFuture made me hope again that there might be a future for #LongDistanceAirTravel with next to no #ClimateImpact.
Because as much as it is harmful right now for the climate, politically, socially, long distance travel made the world a better place. I deeply believe that.

Speaking of #kimstanleyrobinson, I have a forthcoming piece coming out soon about what I think is a pretty radical concept from #TheMinistryfortheFuture that could help us make a serious dent in fighting climate change. Looking forward to sharing it once it's published!

Blimey... Just finished reading #TheMinistryForTheFuture a strangely positive book in spite of many grim examples of #ClimateCrisis incidents. First chapter describing a #Heatwave incident in #India is extraordinary.. sadly suspect we'll be seeing similar heat related stories and deaths in the real world soon. #ClimateChange #Permaculture #Rewilding #RenewableEnergy #Airships #CarbonCoins

Really amazed that with all this talk of #Cerberus #HeatWave in #Europe there has been almost no mention at all of the #WetBulbTemperature. This is the temperature where people become unable to sweat to cool down. It's related to humidity but next few days these will be a real issue particularly in tourist areas of #Spain and #Italy. The first chapter of #TheMinistryForTheFuture gives a graphic description of a #WetBulb event in #India.. not an easy read but sadly a taste of things to come with #ClimateChange. This graph show the risks from temperature and humidity. #WetBulbGlobalTemperature

This review of #TheMinistryForTheFuture is, so far, spot on. So much of the book is handwavey magic deus ex machina type stuff. https://www.currentaffairs.org/2021/01/the-ministry-for-the-future-or-do-authors-dream-of-electric-jeeps

It's crazy hot in Texas…but if you scroll down a bit in the article Bryan links below, you'll see it's /even more ridiculously hot in Mexico/, like, 120+ degree heat index hot over much of the country.
I'm still partway through #TheMinistryForTheFuture and it's extremely eerie wondering if I'm looking right at a real life version of that story's opening.
-
@b9AcE as this is happening, I can only remember how #kimstanleyrobinson presented #india heat debacle in #theministryforthefuture

In related news I started reading #TheMinistryForTheFuture this week. So that's fun :D
Oh right, I never bookwyrm'd about that…fine. https://bookwyrm.offby1.net/user/bitprophet/comment/2555#anchor-2555 - still suspect the bookwyrm-to-mastodon flow is janky enough that I will eventually just stick with my Obsidian tracking only, & drop links to book repositories when I want to discuss things on here.

I've just started reading #KimStanleyRobinson's #TheMinistryForTheFuture - a novel about #ClimateChange set in the very near future.
Apt that the first sentence of the first chapter is "It was getting hotter."
-
I just finished #TheMinistryForTheFuture by Kim Stanley Robinson and really liked it! I'd recommend it to anyone interested in #solarpunk concepts that aren't too far removed from the present.
The book is a collection of different perspectives on projects lessening impacts of climate change and steering towards a better future, following the Paris Agreement. The method of story telling took some getting used to, but was overall effective and interesting!
