  3. I don’t give half-star ratings because I think it’s kind of weaselly. 5 different ratings (or 6 if you count no stars, which I don’t) should be enough to summarize my opinion about anything.

But I was on the fence about this book. 4 stars or 5 stars? Is it a perfect book? No, but what book is? (Feel free to respond with your perfect books.) Is it a book I expect to come back to time and again, like other books I’ve rated 5 stars? Probably not, but I haven’t re-read Stephen Jay Gould’s Wonderful Life either, and that book is profoundly wonderful.

But I love these sorts of little stories. I love some more than others, of course. The haunting ones, the ones where you feel like you could almost step through and see the story unfold, if only you could find the trick to it. The “we don’t know what this person/animal/rock thought about this, but we can probably guess” ones.

So, if you like those kinds of stories, then you should read this book.

  8. In the ‘60s, the CIA sewed microphones and transmitters into live cats. They turned their tails into antennae. They named this operation ‘Acoustic Kitty’.

They slipped the first spy cat out of a van in Washington so it could eavesdrop on two Soviet agents. The kitty was instantly hit by a taxi and killed.

I didn’t expect to add anything to toots about US military use of radioactive foxes and bat bombs, and yet here we are, me and the cyborg spy cats.

  10. While I'm on the subject of #TheMemoryPalace; this episode is, by some margin, the podcast episode I've listened to more than any other. It's absolutely beautiful, to the point that it kind of killed my ability to make my own. Though I hold no animosity towards Nate for this.

  12. The latest episode of #TheMemoryPalace is an absolute stunner. It's a re-upload from 2015, but the beauty of that podcast is that it doesn't matter. They're not chronological, each episode is self-contained.

Do yourself a favour and allow yourself 17 minutes to sit back and listen.

  15. This episode of “The Memory Palace” #podcast just crossed my path again, and as its writer/narrator Nate DiMeo says much more eloquently, it’s timely.
