Continuing to binge #OrsonWelles we watched #CitizenKane the night before last and #TheMagnificentAmbersons last night.
Kane impressed even our fourteen year-old, though TBH, that was expected.
Ambersons was like it always is: absolutely divine until suddenly the wheels come off. Gorgeous, nuanced fluidity until, connective tissue lost, scenes suddenly start bumping up each against other out of nowhere.
Then that BS happy ending.
A sophisticated diminuendo in which the elegance of pre-industrial life succumbs to the chaos of the age of the automobile shrinks into a story about whether Gene loved Isabel enough to bail out her shitty son.
Honestly, if I ever magically got three wishes, I'd use one of them to get the Welles cut of Ambersons back.
