Locked Out Of The Tomb
Tamsyn Muir has remarked that one of the challenges of having made The Locked Tomb as a lifelong participant in fandom is that she cannot participate in or even look at the fandom that she created. That is, she is responsible for the existence of a fandom, and has chosen – for perfectly good reasons! – to avoid it.
I don’t think this is an abnormal activity, for any given author. Right now we live in a world where authors perhaps have to represent themselves in social spaces, and how they engage with that space largely up to the individual. I’ve dealt with a few successful authors on social media, but none I think of as being as successful as Muir is, and Muir has had dealings with the internet that seem to have led to her retreating from it.

The Sun Is Also A Hostage
To live in a world of gods is to live in a world where an individual can threaten not just you but everything you have. It is a world in which you have to hope that god is limited, that god is at least distractable because the alternative is to live in endless fear of the hypervigilant observation of the most evil thing that ever existed as it decides to spend fractions of infinity determining if you jerk off too much.
In the world of The Locked Tomb, god is mercifully, not omniscient, but his power is pretty close to omnipotent, and this is all woven together by a guy who is also desperately cringe and wants you to like him. He wants you to like him so much he’ll do anything to make the world work in a way that likes him. And if that world doesn’t work for him, then there’s probably no point keeping it around, right?

I Pray the Tomb Is Never Opened
A way the Locked Tomb presents its story (‘to me,’ obligatory clause) is through unreliable narrators consistently expressing their relationship to a world of unresolved trauma they carry with them everywhere. The result is a world in which rulership over life and death and the very impossible limits of the human body are secondary to the ways that that human body can be employed as a slave to the needs of the fragile, damaged and extremely unwell mind.
It is a series about stuffing corpses into your emotional baggage.

In positive news: I just finished reading the latest book in #TheLockedTomb series by Tasmyn Muir and hot damn. If you like SciFi/Fantasy then I cannot recommend this series enough. Lesbian necromancers and swordfighters in space. Great characters, super funny/witty, and just overall smart writing. Tempted to start a re-read immediately.
If you've already read this series I'd like to know your interpretation of why Griddle was kind of shitty at the end of NtN?

#NonaTheNinthI reread Gideon the Ninth, first in the series, and was deeply impressed by the many clues and foreshadowing that run through it, knitting it all tight together, that I missed the first time through, because of course that time I did not know where we were heading.
I'm mostly puzzled by books two and three, but I am trusting we end up somewhere that in retrospect will have been inevitable, and I love the characters -
The Locked Tomb Makes Me Wish I’d Been Better
The Locked Tomb is a media franchise I engage with very cautiously. Not because it’s bad or has a sensitive fandom or nothing. Not because it’s somehow hiding a tragic flaw I want to avoid discussing, or breaks under scrutiny, not at all. In fact, it’s perfectly analysable text with a bunch of opportunities for creative space, one of the most millennial pieces of art I can point to in its generalized form and structure, it’s likable and fun and countercultural in ways that are often neglected by the greater landscape, and it touches on a lot of issues that I personally relate to. No I’m cautious because all of those things would be true even if, and this is where I feel a little anxious saying this, but even if I hadn’t spent a couple of years of my life being friends with the author when we were both children.

I hope to make a fictional magazine set in Tamsyn Muir's Locked Tomb universe and I'd like to commission the cover and perhaps back cover artwork for it. Obviously, the magazine itself is of a prurient nature (Does any other kind of magazine exist among the Nine Houses?) but I'm not looking for smut, just a somewhat-suggestive piece in the style of a fashion magazine cover, plus the typography to make it look the part.
