In my 26 years of practicing magic and being involved in occultism, I have not met one cisgendered man, heterosexual or otherwise, who is a Thelemite and not a creep. The men in Thelema are insufferable perverts – and I mean that in the pejorative sense. I am being literal. I have not met one Thelemite who is a cisgendered man that isn’t insufferable or an incel. Not one. If you’re a cisgendered man and I see 156, 663, or anything like that in your bio, I am going to assume you’re a dweeb.

Pagans are just as insufferable as Christians. So, @nemoris found me on my not-so-spooky account from a post I made. From what I can gather, they’re part of that toxic occult and pagan social network still on Twitter. These folks’ pattern of behavior is the same. Similar to that schizophrenic woman, the first thing they do is look up keywords associated with occultism, interact with whoever is the first person to show up, pick a fight, and then start a parasocial relationship. It never changes! It’s always some new random psycho! I think 9/10 times it’s that bizarre nerdy gatekeeping behavior. Mastodon.social suspended this account, so she can’t see or interact with this account. My husband and I think pagans are just as bad as Christians at this point, and don’t get me started on Thelemites or people who follow Hermetism.

I had a sneaking suspicion that being extremely online and obsessive with occult memes and online cultures turned many of the members of DKMU into Markovian chatbots that are even dumber than even ChatGPT. Since I am an empiricist, I decided to test this hypothesis scientifically. One member, in particular, formerly named FishSticks, inspired this experiment, although I collected data from a large sample of DKMU members.
I collected a substantial amount of posts from the members of DKMU’s social media profiles, including Tumblr, Twitter, Mastodon, etc., and BlueSky using APIs and web scraping tools. I trained a Markov chain text generator using the preprocessed data from Tumblr, Twitter, and BlueSky. Then, I used the trained Markov model to generate synthetic posts.
These posts mimic the style and content of posts found on the aforementioned platforms that I know were written by bots, as well as memes. I trained it on accounts I knew were automated, including bots occultists made. I extracted things like word frequencies, sentence structure, average post length, etc., from the members of DKMU’s posts.
Since I wanted to compare the similarity between two vectors, particularly in high-dimensional spaces, I used Cosine Similarity. It calculates the cosine of the angle between two vectors and provides a similarity score ranging from -1 to 1. Since I am working with text data, I used word embeddings such as Word2Vec embeddings to represent the text data in a dense vector space to calculate similarity using cosine similarity or other distance measures in this vector space.
I used t-tests since I have a continuous measure of similarity (e.g., cosine similarity scores between real and synthetic posts) to see whether the mean similarity score differs significantly between the two groups. It didn’t. What does that mean?
To put it simply, it means that speaking to the members of DKMU is not significantly different from speaking to a chatbot that spews random nonsense. Considering they’ve bound an egregore to a Markov bot, you can actually treat them in a similar manner. If someone were able to scientifically prove that I am almost identical to a chatbot that spews nonsense, I would see that as a problem. I truly don’t understand how they can be comfortable living like that. This is an empirical case that shows they have absolutely no identity. At all. The insane thing is that many of these same people get highly offended when people mistake them for a bot.
Considering that many of these folks try their hand at being occult authors, that means you could actually replace their writing with ChatGPT, and no one would notice because they are almost identical to a Markov bot!
These extremely online folks have literally degenerated. Their brain is actually rotting. Wow. Stay away from cults people!

The facets of me probably confuse a lot of people. I’m not a typical vampire. I absorb the energy from and the experiences of whoever is around me. While I don’t absorb semantic knowledge, I absorb tacit knowledge — the knowledge of how.
So, if you know how to do ceremonial magic, and I am in your locality, I will absorb via osmosis your knowledge of how to do ceremonial magic. However, I won’t absorb the semantic knowledge of the literal meanings of symbols. But, I will have an intuitive knowledge and recognition of those symbols if I see them. I won’t have a literal understanding of them; however, I will have an abstract and intuitive knowledge of what they mean from tapping into another magician’s experience with them. If you know chaos magic, I will now know chaos magic. If you know witchcraft, I will know witchcraft.
As of late, I am consciously and deliberately blocking absorption of that knowledge because I feel the experiences of many occultists are tainted with insanity, and I am not trying to go crazy with them. That is why it is beyond idiotic to try to gate keep and use magic against me. If you are in my locality, i.e., there is a causal, physical pathway for interaction like physical, albeit digital interactions on social media, I can absorb knowledge from you. A way to stop this would, of course, be to leave me alone.
It is why I can circumvent gatekeeping and initiation. The purpose of initiation is to create an ineffable experience that is tied to that cohort and culture. It bridges the gap between semantic knowledge from what is written in grimoires and the internal experiences and ineffable knowledge to work the magic. By absorbing the tacit knowledge from what it seems like to do to know how to do something, I can intuitively know how to do it. Magic is subjective; therefore, it is tied to subjective forms of qualia such as how it seems like to see blue or the blueness of blue to you. It is tied to your experience of what it seems like to be you. Since I can tap into that, I can tap into the ineffable aspects of magic.
To say it differently, I have the ability to telepathically channel and intuitively imitate abilities. This doesn’t apply to just magic and occultism. If I am around a person who can play the piano, I will know how to play the piano. If I am around a person who knows Math, I will know how to do Math. Unfortunately, unless I learn it and create experiences and memories for myself, it doesn’t stick around. Well, it does and does not.
My husband, who has permission to poke around my head, says that my mind is like the mansion from 13 ghosts, where my subconscious mind is like a giant maze structured around a black hole. I seem to create an instance, model, or homunculus of the person in my mind where the tacit knowledge and the qualia of their subjective experience are channeled into that representation. I don’t forget it so much that I shove that instance of the person into the maze. It is not so much that I am a brilliant magician and genius; instead, I absorb information. My husband calls me a living grimoire.

I think occult models, patterns, and schemas are dangerous and pathological; however, that doesn’t mean I think magic is the same. I’m a sorcerer who practices magic, but I am convinced that occultism is poison. I am psychic and interact with magical forces on a psychic level. This means that my mind is in contact with the energy of the collective experiences correlated with magical systems. To create a barrier between my consciousness, the edge of my consciousness, and the insanity, I create elaborate systems of abstractions.
Besides that, occult systems have been poisoned on a cultural and psychic level. For Wheel of Time readers, it’s equivalent to the poisoning of the Saidin half of the One Power. Luckily, occult systems are more like a contrived psychic construct, loosely associated with culture and resonating with experience. Any sorcerer can isolate themselves from that poison by using a different system of cultural patterns, allegories, and drawing from a different set of experiences.
Furthermore, every still practicing occultist I know from my cohort has become insane and spiraled off into dark web conspiracy esoteric orders. I really do mean the dark web. Currently, I’m working on abstracting and extracting elements of magic from the occult prototypes and patterns. Unfortunately, the Venn diagram between toxic nerds, incels, and problematic occult memes, patterns, and images is a circle. Popular art has been just as poisoned, so I will need to create this from scratch. However, I need to make it abstract enough to resonate with other people’s experiences on a psychic level so I can draw and amplify psychic energy.
Moreover, I believe drinking from a poisoned well of power is pushing magicians over the edge. Almost every schizophrenic woman who forms a parasocial relationship with me, cis-gendered or trans, is associated with Babalon explicitly. They explicitly integrate their ritualistic practices with 156. Doing some research, I’ve noticed that this association between schizophrenic women and Babalon goes all the way back to the 1970s and 1980s. There is an associative correlation between Babalon and schizophrenic women that decide to engage in magic dealing with them. There are systems that my mind flags as dangerous. It outlines them in red, causing me not to seek out detailed knowledge of them, so my knowledge of Babalon is limited. My mind has explicitly outlined her with red and put up wards. Someone in my psionic cohort is getting drawn down rabbit holes via that particular deity, albeit I believe it is the culture and them being terminally online that is responsible and not some supernatural force. They really should be seeking out psychiatric help. I am not calling anyone out; instead, I am seeing a pattern of schizophrenic women from different cohorts – cis and trans – drawn to Babalon, so there is some association between that deity and schizophrenic women, whether paranormal or purely psychological and psychiatric.
Furthermore, my mental wards are not intended to prevent external entities from doing something; instead, they prevent me from doing things. If I get a flash of prescience that says there is danger ahead of me and I am walking, it will be harder and harder for me to continue physically walking until I just stop walking. I have to turn around because my subconscious mind has placed a block on that decision. I don’t know why, but my body won’t allow me forward. I go home and then find out if I kept walking I would have walked into a shootout. I have an intuitive sense of what is a bad rabbit hole to go down or how deeply I can descend without losing my way. Adopting the jargon of chaotes who like SCP, I have a cognitohazard sensor built into my subconscious mind that makes itself known implicitly through my gut. Seeing the shit show that is Thelema, I am glad I did not jump on that wagon when my cohort did. When I say my cohort, I am specifically referring to millennials that were involved in paranormal, energy working forums, and IRC servers in the late ’90s and early 2000s.
Additionally, as a teen, I never researched The runes of the Elder Futhark because my mind intuitively labeled many pagan ideologies as red and made me feel uncomfortable about much of the stuff I was reading. Over a decade later, I see the relationships many of those magical groups have to white supremacy, Nazis, etc. I think the nature of the culture and how they enable mental illness is to blame. My husband trusts me when I tell him I get a bad feeling about social influencers because, lo and behold, it comes out they did something awful.
Moreover, I have an odd relationship with reality. Anyone who knows me knows that I am highly skeptical and constantly lecturing about not losing touch with reality. I emphasize using an empirical perspective, but I love mathematics. Math has an odd relationship with reality. It is more abstract than reality and doesn’t necessarily describe reality; rather, it describes the inferences and consequences of rules, like a game. Math is less a description of reality and more like a game and story that writes itself. We also cannot empirically observe the number 1. 1 and I are symbols that point to the concept of 1, and Algebra is the manipulation of symbols per rules and relationships. A professor I had in college drove that lesson home. He made sure that we understood that mathematics is the manipulation of symbols and concepts, and that algebraic relationships are nothing more than rules that entities must obey. Math is a symbolic language whose purpose is to describe things in such a way that the ambiguity of everyday language is removed. Symbolically, numbers and magical sigils are both ideograms, so both mathematical symbols and sigils denote the same type of symbol. There’s a tautological relationship between a conceptual and ideal realm of Math and reality that humans know of via intuition. A video that goes into that is:
I am not saying occultism is based on Mathematics because often Mathematical proofs of occult systems wind up false somewhere. I am stating that Mathematics shows an epistemological and ontological link between the Ideal, the Mental, and what we think of as Reality. The existence of Logic and Mathematics creates a paradox when discussing that in conjunction with Empiricism, ironically. Mathematics provides me with a logical basis for magical thought.
To be precise, I normally define divination and sorcery as inverses of each other. The etymology of the word sorcery is one who shifts fate, essentially.
sorcery (n.)
c. 1300, sorcerie, “witchcraft, magic, enchantment; act or instance of sorcery; supernatural state of affairs; seemingly magical works,” from Old French sorcerie, from sorcier “sorcerer, wizard,” from Medieval Latin sortiarius “teller of fortunes by lot; sorcerer,” literally “one who influences fate or fortune,” from Latin sors (genitive sortis) “lot, fate, fortune” (see sort (n.)).
also from c. 1300Sorcery is a magical art of shifting futures. Divination, on the other hand, is the art of the prediction of futures. For example, a sorcerer would use tarot cards to create a particular future, whereas a diviner would use tarot cards to predict a future. Sorcery has an odd connection to reality. Sorcery is not descriptive like scientific languages that are meant to describe measurements precisely and predict things. Sorcery is an art where a magician intends to influence outcomes where there is a deviation between what the magician causes and what we expect. That difference, because of the deviation, is a gradient of energy. Magical systems are expressions of how things will be, not how they are, so there is a disjointed relationship with reality. When a person casts a spell or shifts a probabilistic and entropic system, even if we are just talking about the entropy of coins or cards to encode information, that person is breaking the unitary symmetry of reality and creating a structure or pattern that aligns with what they have willed to have happened. Fictional narratives are speculative or counter-factual, and in breaking the unitary system of a system, a magician realizes probabilistic subjunctive conditionals.
Furthermore, that creates a paradox because I am quick to criticize magicians for losing contact with reality when they become delusional and believe their hallucinations are real. On the other hand, I tacitly acknowledge that fictions and delusions can become real. Why does it become real for some and not others? Power. Energy. A property that passes from one system to another system that causes a change, i.e., a difference is conventionally referred to via an abstraction we call energy. The ability to get something to change as a consequence of you is power. So, the degree that a magician can do this is relative to energy and power, and we can empirically measure that change because there are physical anomalies because of the symmetry breaking.
Thankfully, mental illness is epistatic to psychic and magical ability. It is like inheriting red hair from your father and a gene for baldness. While your hair is red, no one will see it because you have no hair. Schizophrenia masks and mitigates psychic and magical power by introducing noise, disorder, and entropy. As a result, individuals with schizophrenia lack the ability to manifest their delusions and hallucinations because they struggle to organize and concentrate enough energy. Energy dissipation is correlated with disorder, causing a schizophrenic’s psychic energy to dissipate faster than they can effectively utilize it, making it too diffuse to realize a reality-warping event. Every once in a while, they are lucid; however, they are frequently too insane to be reliable. Psychotropic medications have no negative effect on psychic ability, so the best thing a schizophrenic person can do to improve their magic is to get on antipsychotic medication.
Moreover, potential energy can be thought of as the energy of configuration. It is the energy an entity has from its relationship to other things, internal or external. For example, mass is energy that matter is and has that emerges from its internal configuration of gluons. The configuration of gluons gives rise to hadrons like protons. Heat, in the form of enthalpy, relates to internal configurations of matter. In this context, the potential energy of the system comes from how a culture patterns and stores the experiences of its members.
Since I am discussing potential energy within the context of a psychic network, I should provide a more precise definition of energy. We can think of people’s minds and attributes of their minds as nodes connected to their own mind and the minds of others, and an adjacency matrix would be a matrix that represents the connections among nodes and the connections themselves as edges, where the edges have a weight. The energy of this system would be the sum of absolute values of the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix. That is pretty abstract. An eigenvalue is just a factor by which something is stretched or compressed, so the energy of the network is a sum of how we can scale something. We can think of it as springs. The higher the value, the more you can stretch out the spring where the energy of that spring is the extent to which you can stretch it or compress. So, in this, we can think of the connections as standing waves, and eigenvalues are how far you can compress or stretch those waves that connect people psychically. That means people are oscillating or vibrating. Algebraically, that would also be what we would call a characteristic polynomial.
While we can think of these connections as lines, it’s more accurate to think of them as vibrating, pulsing waves where the energy of the system relates to the eigenvalues. This, of course, means we can model these psychic networks using partial differential equations and wave equations. The analog to the temporal components would be orientations and integrals of experience. Angry people, for example, are vibrating at the frequency of anger, so their energy is characterized by anger. Consequently, they can antagonize others because of their anger and, in turn, provoke similar emotions in others. It seems that many occultists vibrate at literally insane frequencies, thereby spreading a wave of insanity. A wave is a propagation of an oscillation that pushes something out of equilibrium. Occult psychic networks, that occultists are connected to by communities and cultures, emanate waves of insanity that spread memetically or through psychic contact like a contagion.
I don’t think the members of occult cults are actively using the antisocial and insane energy they are storing; instead, I think it is a consequence of cultural and psychosocial factors. I think they become magically realized as an analog to kinetic energy when a psychic magician interacts with that system. The psychic ability of the magician acts as a catalyst; however, since intentionality is the magician’s mind using itself to create a representation of that system, it instantiates a type of image or representation. Since the potential energy comes from, well, insanity, there is an entropic and chaotic backlash on the magician that warps their mind. I think the insanity within occult cults and cultures manifests physically through how they socially interact with each other and their physical behaviors.
In addition, one of the reasons why people have a hard time realizing that I am a sorcerer is that, well, I am normal looking. When people read this without seeing a picture of me, their mind conjures up all sorts of odd ideas of what I must be like. A married, queer, suburban black person living in Atlanta is usually not what they think of so much so that many schizophrenic people have created these odd delusional narratives about me. I am that person next door who wears business casual clothing most of the time or basic jeans and a tank top. I don’t wear occult symbols, and I am not edgy. I don’t give off a witchy vibe. I like that suburban person next door vibe, so I am rejecting the image of the sorcerer that wears cloaks, robes, etc.
Furthermore, I think I am going to base magical patterns and templates that I create on how I intuitively recognize magic. If I am watching a film or reading a book, does this feel magical? The first step is to drop the lexicon, which is why I am not using occult terms.
Many people ask if I have such a bad attitude about occultism, why am I involved in it. The short answer is my mom’s a witch, albeit a cunning woman would be a more apt description of her, that lived in denial of her magic and that cost her her sanity and her relationship with her child – me. My maternal great-grandfather, my mother’s grandfather, is white and Irish. Specifically, we are descended from Irish Travelers. That’s where the psychic abilities I inherited from my maternal side come from, albeit I am culturally black. The past is the past and skeletons should be left buried, so I am in no hurry to look into that side of me. I am multiracial and multicultural; however, I choose to identify as a black person with one reason being that is how society treats me. The archetype of the witch is not a specific cultural instance; instead, it is more of a broad anthropological classification. The south is filled with many black witches who don’t even know they are witches. My marriage to an animistic indigenous man and where our cultures intersect make me question the separation between shaman, wizard, and witch, but that touches on intimate topics.
To me, magic is a transformative act that illuminates things. Beyond the influence, it reveals things about our society in the very aesthetic elements of the artistic medium itself. I think magicians need to move past occult systems. They’re poisonous.

Because it needs to be said again:
Psychosis is not gnosis. Taking LSD, psilocybin, MDMA, salvia, or even alcohol and reinforcing those states with fictional, mythological narratives through ceremonial magic can cause a psychotic break. You are not magical. You are not enlightened. You have broken your brain. Psychosis has degenerative effects on your brain, so you are altering your brain in irreversible ways. I know this from experience.
My step-grandmother worked herself into such a drug-induced state of psychosis that, as a senior, she has to be heavily sedated, causing her to gain weight and become massively overweight, with her mind numb. That’s a whole other saga, but my step-grandmother held religious and esoteric beliefs, subscribing to conspiracy theories, and was a heavy drug user in her teens and young adult years, although she has been sober for almost 30 years. It permanently messed her up. We know she isn’t taking her meds when she is sharper; unfortunately, that means she is psychotic. We found out she needed to be heavily medicated when she attacked a police officer in my junior year of high school.
Again, you are not doing magic when you take drugs, force yourself to believe in things that are not real, and purposefully incubate a delusion, reinforcing this with ostension and pantomime via ceremonial magic and ritual. You are driving yourself insane and giving yourself brain damage that you will have to deal with as you get older. Once again, I am seeing the marauder and the extremely online occulture crowd drive themselves into a psychotic break because they believe that’s how you do magic.
Here’s what people need to remember: The conventional, modern definition of magic is that magic is changing reality in accordance with will. While I deeply abhor and despise Aleister Crowley and Thelema, I like that definition because it converges on the definition of art. It’s more of an affirmation of magic as an art that fits nicely with pragmatic theories of aesethics. Conventionally, art is the deliberate and willful manipulation of elements, channels, and mediums, so the modern definition meets the definition of art.
Personally, my style of magic and overall praxis has been influenced by things like “Art as an Experience.” From my perspective, magic is art, and art is a refined and heightened experience where the artist and the audience co-create an experience, thus initiating a magical operation. Essentially, there is no significant difference between a ceremonial magician and an actor playing out my favorite scenes in The Vampire Diaries universe. Crowley’s definition is merely a means to make the connection between art and magic more deliberate, although, counter-intuitively, he was trying to create a demarcation between stage and theatrical magic and ceremonial magic. Words cannot express how much that man repulses me. He was essentially a perverse and deviant sexual predator. While I am not a chaote, post-modern art and surrealism are my favorite forms of art, so there is an intersection on some points metaphysical points. It’s probably why I hate modern and solomonic magic so much.
What is art? A rock I found outside becomes art when I think it has an aesthetic quality, say it is art, pick it up, and exhibit it through displaying it as photography on my social media. So my appreciation and deliberate interaction with it as art is what makes it art. So, there is a link between modern definitions of magic and pragmatic ideas of art via intention and will. Magical potency is predicated on will. Compulsion, obsession, and addiction are the inability to willfully and deliberately control oneself, so they are inversely related to will. That means drug addiction, obsessions, and paranoia that emerge from mental illness, and psychosis cancel out your ability to do magic.
Magic isn’t psychosis. Gnosis is not psychosis.

I had planned to put him in the friend zone. My roommate, who was supposed to pick me up from work that day, decided to throw a gay orgy instead, where I was picking up used condoms on the floor. I could not say anything to said roommate because we went to bathhouses together, so it would have been largely hypocritical. My now-husband took me to one of his shows in the city to get my mind off of that. He did that because he knows my temper is awful, and he knew I was plotting petty payback. I got to see my now husband work, and that was when I started to fall for him. I won’t go into any details because insane occultists have an issue of forming parasocial relationships, but let’s say that watching his performance is when I started to take interest in him.

Honestly, the attitude within occultism is maddening to me. There’s an acknowledgment that Jung, Crowley, Blavatsky, etc. are all horrible people. You don’t have to convince them that they are awful and racists. We all know. However, most occultists can’t be bothered to come up with anything better, so their response is to use broken systems that do not work and tell people to separate the art from the artists and to normalize the evil, immoral behavior of occult authors because, well, they like the status quo.
There’s always been this assumption with sigils and seals in occultism that they are allegories; astrology should be treated as a pattern that isn’t necessarily literal. If magic shifts probabilities, then that means that magic creates topological defects and breaks symmetries, which means that it has an empirical connection to crystallization. And when we are looking at ontological and mathematical models that strongly model crystallization and symmetry, we find tiling and tessellation. I’m experimenting with tessellation, symmetry, magic, and psychic abilities. Honestly, I am through with the culture and aesthetics of occultism, so I am not using anything that resembles occult sigils or even calling mnemonic symbols or any kind of symbol a sigil anymore. Occultism, as a whole, gives me the ick. Occult systems make me feel so dirty that I feel like I need a bath.
Liminal space is a buzzword that you hear a lot. A liminal space is something like a hallway or the threshold of a door. We can also think of liminal spaces as portals and topological defects, which is an accurate analogy for the symmetry-breaking that magic causes in physical systems. I am thinking of symbols that are more accurate of a topological defect, such as a phase transition. Because of meta-stability, liquid crystals are sensitive to psychic influence and exhibit topological defects via phase transition, so models and symbols based on liquid crystals are realistic for phase transitions that liminal spaces imply.
A physical example of a topological defect is liquid crystals. I like playing around with crystallization and psychic and magical acts because it provides an empirical case. Probabilities are not abstract. Whenever you influence probabilities, you are manipulating where something is going and how fast it is moving, or you are defining where it is. If you are dealing with a system, you are coordinating how fast things are, where they are going, and where they are at for multiple parts of that system. You are shifting statistical mechanical properties of a solution. The shape and structure of a crystal are tied to the probability of that crystal structure emerging, so shifting probabilities shifts the shape of the crystal that we expect to get, which we can experimentally test and measure. Boltzmann distribution, a fundamental concept in statistical mechanics, describes the probability of a molecule occupying a certain energy state. In the context of a crystal lattice, different molecular arrangements correspond to different energy states and when you shift probabilities, you shift where that favorable energy state is likely to be.
An exercise that I did a long, long time ago is that I constructed a class, to act as an archetype, and properties of that class were a data structure imported from an actual social network from Twitter that matched the parameters of the properties of that class. That was before Twitter became X. I would not dare use anything from that domain of the noetic sphere now. I used Gephi for this. I used the Force Atlas 2 layout in Gephi to simulate attraction and repulsion forces via a Barnes–Hut algorithm. The algorithm uses an adaptive cooling strategy similar to annealing. This gave me a network that was also a crystal. I then dissolved a solute into a solution and grew a crystal where my intent was to link to the psychic form of that pattern, project the simulated crystal onto the growing crystal, and measure the structure of the crystal.
That exercise created a magical, symbolic construct that was not only realistic but also empirically valid. I am thinking about using tessellation, tiling, and symmetry to denote magical systems instead of employing anything that resembles occult symbols.

We really need to stop calling obvious schizophrenia, manic delusions, and psychosis ‘unverified personal gnosis.’ A person whom I knew 15 years ago has persistent beliefs, regardless of facts, that they knew me in a past life and we made some pact to alter the future to save the world from Nazis. It’s insane, but everyone in the occult Discord is nodding their heads and validating it.
A delusion is a persistent belief regardless of facts. This person has dreams and hallucinations that they believe are gods, spirits, and telepathy. In these hallucinations and delusions, the spirits tell them who random strangers were in a past life. A lot of these delusions are obviously paranoid and inevitably roll into a conspiracy theory about Nazis. This is very terrifying. This means, based on a random occurrence with a person, they will create a parasocial narrative that manifests as them knowing this person.
Most schizophrenia delusions emerge from noise and thus have no actual information. You can uncover that it is a delusion by asking the person for details. For example, if they make a claim about remembering a past life in Egypt, you can do the equivalent of asking them who the President of the United States is now. I did that with this person. They were claiming to have known me and other people in a past life in Egypt 3000 years ago, so I looked up what was going on around that time. I asked them who the high priest was, who the pharaoh was, and what they remember happening around that time. All of it was wrong.
That caused most of that Discord to jump all over me and imply that it was fine because it was their personal gnosis. To be clear, this person is creating parasocial relationships and narratives based on delusional narratives that they are applying to random people they meet.
Phrasing things as they happened in a different reality or a past life is a way to avoid the falsification of and is a way to rationalize the delusion. Claiming that you knew a person in a past life is a way to justify the parasocial relationship. It is not unverified personal gnosis. It’s mental illness. There is nothing magical about mental illness. If I had a nickel for every time a schizophrenic occultist spun up a delusional narrative to justify an adversarial parasocial relationship with me, I’d be rich. This is a major problem.

Here’s your reminder that the inability to tolerate dissent and the emphasis on conforming to cultural norms, where you are punished with excommunication (banning, de-federation, etc.), shaming, or bullying, is a sign that it is a cult. Regardless of whether you are on the left or the right, if the platform, instance, or community you are part of is intolerant of dissent, does not welcome an adversarial paradigm that involves the review and criticism of their views, and throws you out for dissenting with people in positions of authority, it is a cult.
Of course, that means that most of you people on Mastodon have joined instances and cults. How can you tell if you are in a cult? The first clue is the inability to dissent and the expectation you conform. Unfortunately, this cult-like behavior is hitting occult niches hard. I am seeing the old skeptical and rigorous paradigm that occultists operated within during the late ’90s and early 2000s morph into authoritarianism and a cult-like fanaticism where people must enable the delusional beliefs of the people who run the communities, which, of course, spreads mental illness among other people. The people who used to be skeptical are getting further and further into esoteric, religious cults. Watching how people are losing their minds about threads on Mastodon is a reminder of how social media has become networks of cults.
Can you disagree with your instance admin without retaliation? If not, you did not just join an instance. You joined a cult. Do not join cults. If you are being pressured to conform to something you disagree with, leave. It is always harder to leave a cult after you have joined than if you just avoided them altogether.
Here is your other reminder that abusers and cult leaders seek to isolate people from information that counters their indoctrination or propaganda. When your admin forbids dissent and isolates the members of that instance from communicating with other dissenting views, they are doing what cult leaders and abusers do. They are isolating you. It isn’t for your safety. They are censoring, removing, and isolating their members to get people to conform. If you cannot dissent, you are punished for not conforming, information is censored, and you are isolated, you are in a cult. The cult is just on Discord or Mastodon.
This part is aimed specifically at Discord communities. If you go through a gatekeeping process to join, have to apply, or undergo a vibe check/interrogation, it’s a cult. Run. It is a selection process where those types of processes are skewed towards the most harmful and radical. Either you will conform and thus become inevitably radicalized, or you will end up in a room full of terrorists and mentally insane people.

I just saw someone in the Discord for r/occult reference very old Retro PK experiments. I am very annoyed with people abandoning their skepticism. Objectivity and empiricism tend to get conflated, and they are correlated with each other; however, they are not one and the same. Empiricism is knowledge that you have experienced for yourself, whereas anecdotal is a story you heard. If you were to ask me why I believe in the paranormal stuff that I do, my response would be because of the experiences I have had. When I tried to disprove that it was paranormal, my alternative hypothesis that it was not paranormal did not hold up, and its being paranormal was supported. Spontaneous paranormal experience is what caused me to seek things out and research things, so my experiences came before someone telling me that magic and psychic stuff are real. Because the peer-review and science journal process haven’t been unscathed by corruption and the insidious reach of capitalism. I do not just accept something because it has gone through the peer review process. I look at the number of times it has been cited by other articles and the reputability of the work that cited it; I look at the impact, I look at the credibility and integrity of the editorial board, I look at the journal’s ranking score. Because of the nature of paranormal subjects, many of these topics are like that. That is why you attempt to replicate what they did. You do the science yourself, and you see if you get your own data.
My cohort of millennial occultists frustrate me. There is a difference in cohorts when it comes to magic. Gen X is more conventionally modern and postmodern, whereas millennials were strongly encouraged by high strangeness, mesmerism, theosophy, new age ideas, energy work, and parapsychology. For example, I’m part of a cohort of psions; though, I no longer practice psionics, and the realization that it was built from Dungeons and Dragons role-playing kind of freaks me out and depresses me. Energy is just an abstraction of change, and power connotes the ability to get something to change as a consequence of; therefore, energy working paradigms connote an interest in power. Unlike Gen X, for example, that is more concerned with a normative paradigm, which is part of the reason why many of them are so interested in politics, millennials had a particular interest in power without the authority. There was a particular contempt for esoteric orders we had – that I still have, which is why I said we wanted power without authority.
Modern magic is more or less ontological, unfalsifiable, not testable, and concerned with spirituality and how people should live their lives. Whereas science aims to describe and predict, spirituality is more about giving people a framework for making decisions, what they should do, and how they should live their lives. Normative expressions are ontologically disjointed from reality in that they describe how things should be but do not aim to describe how they are. For example, people should not be fascists; however, the reality is that fascists exist, though, I assert they should not exist. Instead of being inductive and epistemological like science, that form of occultism is metaphysical like Math. Instead of supporting and revising itself, the ontological entities accumulate. There’s a collection of occult texts, for example, that are canon.
Honestly, some days I feel better because having the experiences I have had robbed me of my ability to deny their existence and live a normal life. My life is just as messed up as a person without psychic abilities who does not practice magic. Magicians and psychics are not special. In fact, our sensitivity to psychic and magical forces makes us more susceptible to self-destruction, obsession, addiction. I think people have this misconception. We don’t practice magic because we want to; instead, a series of events lead us down this path regardless of our wishes or wants. I find it ironic. The illusion of magic is that of power and the ability to control things and express your agency; however, being born the way I was into this deep ocean of weirdness was beyond my control. I did not have a choice, and that makes me resentful.
My cohort of the paranormal demographic frustrates me because we are approaching our 40s. Many of us, myself included, have been doing this for over 20 years. We have passed the book club and student phase, yet many of us still approach these subjects from the paradigm we developed while in school. The trope of the magical school, whether that be high school. We are past the age of even being in college. My student loan debt alone tells me that. I’m zeroing in on my cohort because we were the ones especially skeptical. Replication is part of the peer-review process. The research I see people I knew from 15 years ago spreading is literally over 20 years old. Not only have the parapsychology researchers done better, more relevant work, claiming that one has magical powers, psychic powers, psychokinesis, etc., is an extraordinary claim. How does one test the claim? You do the science yourself. At this point, all of us should have a nice lab journal filled with a lot of our results. There is no reference to any data. It is just a bunch of models, diffuse articles with a tenuous connection to whatever it is that they are claiming, and no attempt, at all, to replicate the experiments they are citing.
We call Hard Science Fiction a genre of fiction because while it is grounded in science, it is grounded in speculation. On the other hand, Fantasy in a Science Fiction setting, like Warhammer 40K, is fiction because it is counterfactual; i.e., subjunctive conditionals. We can think of things we extrapolate that do not have measurable instances as conjectural, at best. That means that occultists that do not take the time to fill their models and paradigms with data are, essentially, writing fiction and ostentate fiction – they are LARPing. Ontologically and epistemologically, there is no difference between most of what I see alone about occultism and magic and genres of fiction, such as magical realism. Magical realism is more interesting and novel.

Honestly, some days I feel bitter because having the experiences I have had robbed me of my ability to deny the existence of the paranormal and live a normal life. My life is just as messed up as a person without psychic abilities who does not practice magic. Magicians and psychics are not special. In fact, our sensitivity to psychic and magical forces makes us more susceptible to self-destruction, obsession, addiction. I think people have this misconception that magicians and psychics. Technically, magic is more art than science, so magicians are really just artists that use magic through different crafts and mediums. We are just as fucked up as any other artists and just as tragic.
We have passed the book club and student phase, yet many of us still approach these subjects from the paradigm we developed while in middle and high school. The trope of the magical school, whether that be high school or a university, is still prevalent with my cohort.
