"Happy vs Grumpy"

This week I started back at work on my Tashi Project. I've stepped away for many months, and that's a good thing. It's easy to get too close to a project and lose sight of how to take it forward. I have better perspective after giving it some distance, and hopefully can find a way to bring this to light in the coming months.
Reposting my YouTube update on the Tashi Project here, which was useful for myself to rewatch today :)

I'm selling the Himalayas :) One monk at a time.

In a village filled with goats, Tashi's parents chose to herd sheep! They get well cared for, and Tashi's mum likes to hand out a few extra grains of corn as a treat at the end of the day.

I've been working very hard on a big doco project and haven't had much time for my YouTubes. Today I've posted a new video that shares a little of that journey, and my path to make better choices.

Tashi and I took a little walk one morning to look for birds, and what I thought was a flock of sparrows turned out to be gorgeous little rose finches. My eyes struggled to discern them from such a distance, but a 600mm lens definitely helps!
Soooooo glad I brought this lens to Nepal :)📷 LUMIX S1RII + Sigma 60-600mm F4.5-6.3 Sports

Super big day today. Young Tashi launched his very first photo exhibition. Had some Kathmandu media. Lots of guests to celebrate with him. Friends and friends of friends.
Felt like we did something worthwhile today. Made some people smile.

Tashi always brings a little magic :)

The last light on Machhapuchhre. Each time I thought this view was fading into dusk, just a hint more colour would come through. This image taken on the Lumix S1RII and Sigma 60-600mm lens. Amazing combination, and amazing detail in the RAW file.

Unexpected joys of the spring weather. Earlier in the day we faced storms, but they cleared in time for us to arrive in Pokhara and enjoy some stunning views of Machhapuchhre.
Kind of hard to believe that these places really exist. And you can just go for a walk and shoot a scene like that.

Still in Bhaktapur with this series. I visit here every year, and pretty much every year I take a photo of Kumari. This time the shoot escalated a little! This old temple had just been renovated and gave us a wonderful glow as morning sun streamed through the lattice work. I love a little serendipity.

Tashi is a very shy person, so this little moment was really special. He had been taking pictures of the wide scene with me for a while, but decided he needed to go up to these Newari ladies and ask to take their picture. Up close. Very proud of you Tashi!
-
One of those moments that you cannot plan for, but have to be ready for. Lovely things always seem to happen in Bhaktapur :)
-
The key to photography is never to rush it. Take the time to take your time. Slowly slowly. Khuley khuley.
-
Might be that the best part of this journey was when Tashi got his own Macro lens and hence a chance to discover something very new and very wonderful. His patience with the butterflies is exemplary. There was a moment when he realised that you need more than flowers to chase butterflies, you need the sun as well. Butterflies are essentially solar powered, they most active once they've had a chance to toast under the sun a little.
-
If you happen to be in Kathmandu next week and want to enjoy some photography, there's a marvellous exhibition being held in the Lazimpat part of town.
Tashi is a monk who has a genuine passion for photography. His journey will be long, but well documented!

Sunrise over Mustang. We got up early to hike a little higher up the hill and look down on the valley below. Up ahead is the route to Upper Mustang, once a place of great mystery but now easily accessible by road.

One of the "blues" and I have no idea which species. Pretty sure the only way to identify these things is to dunk in a jar of formaldehyde and send to a museum somewhere in London.
Which I do not want to do. Happy just to take photos thanks.
Anyway, the Nepali name for butterfly is Putali. Do whatever you want with that information.

These little guys are real favourites of mine. Was very excited to see them this morning, and for the rest of the morning we spotted them everywhere. The females have orange where the males have blue.
-
This fella gave us a good session, and waited patiently for us to take turns. Love the tiny little flourishes of colour that you just don't see until poking a macro lens into his orbit.
-
This time, not a leaf.

This was a few days ago. Getting a closer look at one of the dusty old prayer books. Such a lovely object, and so well preserved.
-
Been a big day. Half a terabyte level of big. But some great moments in there. And a tonne of post-editing to get on top of it all.
That's a problem for Future Ewen.

Sunrise today over Kagbeni. So much to love about this part of the Annapurnas.

These little fellas were so hard to get close to. Every so often one will give up for a while and let you take a shot.

Turns out Tashi really really really enjoys having a macro lens to play with. This Sigma 105mm F2.8 was the first macro lens I bought for L-mount (although it comes in other varieties too). It opened up a whole new world for me. It's amazingly sharp.
Now it belongs to Tashi.

So this amazing little moment happened today.
I've worked with a particular guide in Bhutan for about a decade now. He's a gentle fellow and simply the best guide I've ever had. And I've had some really great guides.
Rinzi saw my project to make a TV series in Nepal, and saw my fundraising page. He offered to shout us a brekky (one of the donation options) so he could contribute.
Today is Buddhist New Year by the way. Losar Tashi Delek!
