  1. #Germany's Culture Minister #WolframWeimer of the #CDU is a former leading journalist, and now an extreme right culture warrior who suppresses critics of #Israel and of #imperialism, and denounce supporters of #Palestine for "#antisemitism". In 2017, #Weimer condemned #UNESCO as ideologically controlled by despots, Islamists, & left-wing ecologists. He uses security services to censor cultural awards.

  2. A tale of 2 columns.

In #TheIrishTimes, #FinnMcRedmond laments British disdain for #Starmer. 'he believed in standards and probity', lies McRedmond. archive.is/2FKnd

In #TheGuardian, #AdityaChakrabortty notes the real Searmer: 'deceiving his way to the top of the Labour party, sitting on his hands during the massacre in Gaza or clamping down on protest against it.' archive.ph/7xuvQ

McRedmond's centrist lies are as mendacious as Tory hagiography of #BorisJohnson.

  3. 75% of #Irishpeople support #Irishneutrality.

#CatherineConnolly's clear support for undiluted #neutrality was a big factor in her landslide victory in the #Aras25 presidential election.

Ireland's centrist media runs a propaganda barrage against neutrality. This is a rare case of 3 Irish academics being allowed in The #IrishTimes to make a pro-neutrality case: Patrick Bresnihan, Niamh Ní Bhriain, and Rory Rowan. #TheIrishTimes #iepol

  4. What in the name of God is wrong with people who object to bilingual street signs?

If you don't read the #IrishLanguage, that's fine. The #EnglishLanguage sign is still there for you.

In #TheIrishTimes, Newton Emerson denounces "#Belfast’s aggressive signage policy". In reality, the only aggression is from #unionists who want the Irish language off their streets.

    #EnoughAlready. Make all signs bilingual

  5. Fintan O'Toole is a liberal rather a lefty, but he is a social democratic liberal rather than a classical liberal. So there was hope that the doyen of Irish columnists would show some sympathy with Connolly's views.

But instead, the mighty O'Toole has thrown his lot in unequivocally with #TheIrishTimes's strident loyalty to the EU's militarism. :(

  6. Novelist #SallyRooney set a trap for the #UK government. ❤ They ran into it. 🤣

Rooney wrote in #TheIrishTimes that she supports #PalestineAction, and would donate her royalties from the #BBC to PA.

Her article is illegal in the UK. So are her donations. But Rooney is an Irish citizen living in Ireland, so the UK government can do sod all about it.

The wise response by the #UKgov would have been silence. But of course, they chose instead to give the story new legs. 🙄

  7. While she would respond to #SineadOConnor, it is bothersome to me so many (well 95%) of people writing about her (media) do not refer to her by her legal name, #ShuhadaSadaqat. Even #TheIrishTimes mentions it 75% down in the article. She converted to Islam and changed her name five years ago. To me, this is akin to dead naming a trans person. It's sad that we talk about how awesome she is when she died but we can't bother to write her legal name? (I'm also guilty of this. Don't come at me.)

  8. #Covid #LongCovid #YesToNoCovid #Covidisnotover #MaskUp

Excellent letter by several scientists to #TheIrishTimes -
highlighting how well #NewZealand did and how disastrously the #pandemic was managed in #Ireland

    Total Covid-19 deaths per million across countries, as of May 2023, provide clear evidence: New Zealand – 538; Japan – 602; South Korea – 666; Australia – 779; Norway – 1,000; Netherlands – 1,309; Canada – 1,358; Ireland – 1,765; Sweden – 2,287; UK – 3,334.

  9. Last Monday was #EuropeDay , the anniversary of the 1950 #SchumanDeclaration , a #European agreement and precursor to the #EU . Martyn Turner of #TheIrishTimes drew a cartoon to celebrate the contrasting fortunes of #Ireland and post- #Brexit #Britain , in terms of #wealth and #GDP . 10. There's many uplifting stories for #EarthDay (#earthday23) in #TheIrishTimes today.
My own is the growing awareness that tree fruits (and nuts) are among the most sustainable foods that people can eat. I often like to think that it wasn't coincidence that the #GardenOfEden was filled with fruits.

  11. In personal business news, we received a "local food hero" award from the #RestaurantsAssociationOfIreland last night, in recognition of the work put into #TipperaryFoodProducersNetwork over the past few years. I'm very grateful to whoever nominated us for this, and of course to the judging panel. #LocalFoodHero sponsored by #TheIrishTimes
