  1. Just finished reading: #SueBurke's #DualMemory. My AI buddy, Adam, encouraged me to read Sue's work, beginning with #Semiosis. I bumped her to the top of the reading list and consumed #Interference and #Usurpation in a matter of days.

I'll read #ImmunityIndex after finishing #TheFifthSeason (by #NKJemisin) later this week.

  2. Thank you to @Erzbet for setting up #KPopMonday with this #KPopIntroPlaylist theme.

I did have a list of five songs, but then I wondered if they are suitable as an introduction, because they are mostly third generation girl group songs.

Obviously my list can't be comprehensive, but should I try to make it representative of various styles and generations?

Or should I stick with my earlier plan, and just post what I love the most?

Hmmm....well, here's something to start off with: a song with an absolute knockout of a chorus, wonderful vocals, and good looking idols in pretty outfits in attractive settings - and it's a song with enough going on to stand up to repeated listening.

  4. And now, with my re-read complete, onto new books.

Book 63 of 2024 is "The Fifth Season" by N.K. Jemisin.

    Edit: finished 13th December.

  5. Finished _The Fifth Season_.

I liked it. I thought it was well written. The way the story unfolds kept me consistently intrigued as the details of this world became increasingly dystopian.

I used the word "tawdry" to describe a kind of outfit, but the word is all too often applicable not just to kpop but to popular culture in general. Yet amidst all the sleaze, gaudiness, and exploitation of both artists and consumers, treasures like "The Fifth Season - SSFWL" are to be found. The MV is both visually magical and full of musical interest, and concludes with Arin voicing an expression of faith in what is at once a bond and a value - "Love for real".

What might be a kind of train or maybe a high-low dress can be seen here.

Kpop stylists often put idols in high-low dresses, but I don't really care for them. They don't offer the silhouette that a full length dress can offer, and all too often the look is more tawdry showgirl than elegant or even cute idol.

In addition, some of the other outfits seem both fussy and inappropriately short for the choreography.

I watched a recent fancam of OMG performing this, one of my all time favourite kpop songs, but disappointment with the outfits sent me back to this M Countdown stage. I will add the fancam as a response to this post.

I love these outfits, derived from a section of the MV, which I will also append as a response to this post. The ombré skirts provide an elegant variation on all black , while the differences in sleeve and neckline obviate dull uniformity. I also like seeing stylists choosing something other than a micro miniskirt hemline; I wish they would do this more often, as I think longer and fuller garments create all sorts visual possibilities as performers dance; think about romantic ballet tutus!

  9. Because I'm weird, I backed #TheFifthSeason #TTRPG because it looked interesting, and then bought and started reading the novel.

  10. The Fifth Season RPG, based on the amazing trilogy by N.K. Jemisin, is now being crowdfunded by Green Ronin!

  11. @lilcoppertop yaaasssss!

    I read #ParableOfTheSower back in 2020. I also finished #ParableOfTheTalents.

I followed along with #AdrienneMareeBrown and #ToshiReagon's #podcast #OctaviasParables. The discussion and questions they asked were so rich and provocative. Would highly recommend.

I'm excited to learn more about Lillith's Brood.

I just finished #TheFifthSeason from #NKJemison and really enjoyed the world building and writing
