  1. I LOVE IT.

    SO MUCH.

    #theEmbrace, the #MLK / #CorrettaScottKing statue in #boston

→ Go see it in person. Seeing it in photographs or video does not do it justice.

  2. Artist Behind Controversial MLK Sculpture Responds To Critics | Amanpour and Company

Heated debate has surrounded a new monument commemorating #MartinLutherKing Jr. and his wife #CorettaScottKing. Unveiled in Boston earlier this month, #TheEmbrace sparked backlash and even mockery. Now, artist #HankWillisThomas is speaking out about his work, alongside the Rev. 3. “You know it’s messed up when Black people and the Proud Boys hate the same statue.”

    #LeslieJones killing it on #TheDailyShow. “I can’t unsee it!”

Explicit language warning for those who might be sensitive. If that’s not a concern, prepare to laugh your head off. I promise, this is the funniest thing you’ve ever seen. youtu.be/bFgZfPZrc-4

‘The Embrace' by Hank Willis Thomas 2023

This monumental bronze sculpture was inspired by a photograph of Martin Luther King, Jr. hugging his wife Coretta following the announcement that he had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

  5. So waaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiitttttttttt, a Black sculptor creates a giant interactive statue that honors not just #MLK, but also #CorettaScottKing and *also* intends it to honor a message and other local #CivilRights leaders and it gets panned by *checks notes* a conservative columnist from the local conservative paper, the conservative wing of the King family and Bird App people? Ok.

My take? I love #TheEmbrace and its symbolism.

  6. “There is a sense in which we are all children and grandchildren of Martin and Coretta Scott King. We are all challenged to carry forth their unfinished work.”

    - #YolandaReneeKing at the unveiling of the #MLK monument #TheEmbrace, honoring her grandparents #MartinLutherKingJr and #CorettaScottKing in #Boston.

There is no doubt whatsoever that MLK’s blood runs in the veins of this young woman. At age 14, she is already a skilled orator.

  7. ‘The Embrace’ is a tribute to love, justice, and the unsung

It recreates the Kings’ embrace when Martin learned he’d won Nobel Peace Prize. It stands 20 feet tall x 40 feet wide on Boston Common where the Kings met as students in the ‘50s.

The memorial also honors 69 local #CivilRights leaders, & “rejects the idea that a single person—usually a man, almost always white—can claim the mantle of greatness alone.”

  8. "A massive monument to Martin Luther King Jr. is scheduled to be dedicated Friday in Boston, where the leader first met his wife, Coretta Scott King. In the early 1950s, he was a doctoral student in theology at Boston University and she was studying at the New England Conservatory of Music"
