  4. THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2 (Disney+)

Remember when the first Sex In the City movie came out. It hyped up the glamour but the script lacked the sophistication of the series.

Well, The Devil Wears Prada 2 has also hyped up the glamour, but its script just lacks development. Most of the plot shows up late in the movie, with the fast tracked momentum of a lavish soap opera.

The original film was story driven all the way through, with each scene important to the plot. The new film relies on us knowing the characters well enough to understand their motives, without proper character arcs.

For example, Miranda (played by Meryl Streep), lets her guard down completely in some lovely scenes, without the proper build up in adjoining scenes which would explain why she has. If we weren't so overly familiar with the first movie, her actions wouldn't make sense.

Yet early on, we question why Anne Hathaway's character is so eager to return to the magazine. Yes, we paused the film and all turned to each other asking this. Sure, she needs the job, but she wouldn't swan in all excited after finding her dignity by walking out twenty years ago.

There's no mention of her former love interest, Nate (played by Entourage's Adrian Grenier). Instead, Patrick Brammall seems to play himself as the new love interest.

Yet we know Patrick as the alcoholic ad executive, the country cop dealing with corpses coming back to life, one of Nina's love interests, and the owner of a crippled dog. He seems wasted (and out of place) in this project. At one point, Anne and Patrick's characters have a minor disagreement. Later it's treated like it was a serious argument when they see each other again.

Caleb Hearon plays a loveable office assistant, whose introduced early yet hardly seen again.

I like how it references the effect on journalism in this digital age, right at the start. It showed us why Runway magazine has lost some of it's iconic status. Usually, a script writer would build momentum from the starting point. Here, this idea gets lost, then found again in between other undercooked ideas.

Regardless, it's still enjoyable, it just doesn't have the re-watchable charm of the first.

  5. Watched #thedevilwearsprada2 and came back with a few thoughts. What do you guys think about the film?

(Honestly, when the film touched upon the topic of layoffs, I kinda felt second-hand stress😅 )
