Started our annual read of The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper. We always read the first chapter out loud - it’s so intense and sets the stage for the following days. There’s a good BBC adaptation from last year as well: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/brand/w13xtvp7 #TheDarkIsReading #Bookstodon

The downer is though that mastodon.scot still isn't visible + boostable now either, though I maybe 2 months ago asked about once-suspended instances still not working.

I am I think now up to date once more with #TheDarkIsReading and liking the book more than when I started. The protagonist has more agency now and there is more to it than just him undergoing a series of strange encounters. It's still a bit "the Dark is Rising and you must defeat it by completing a series of arbitrary tasks", but the book is more about atmosphere than plot, and Susan Cooper's evocation of atmosphere is masterful.

I am I think now up to date once more with #TheDarkIsReading and liking the book more than when I started. The protagonist has more agency now and there is more to it than just him undergoing a series of strange encounters. Also Will seems a bit reactive - finding himself in a succession of strange situations he doesn't really understand. I'm hoping he becomes a bit more active. #TheDarkIsRising

This time last year I was reading The Dark Is Rising, which is seasonably appropriate as it's set at this time of year. I'm not going to reread it this year because I'm in the middle of rereading Miss Smilla's Feeling For Snow (which is also set at this time of year), but I am going to listen to the BBC podcast reading of it, which starts today.

Quite excited to begin #TheDarkIsReading this year! I dug out my old copy and realised to my delight that the book is the same age as me.
I first read it when I was 10/11, have read it regularly since, and am happy to be doing so again, specially at the right time of year! -

Currently reading Beyond, the new Mercedes Lackey about the founding of Valdemar. I love a good origin story, and this world is one of my favourites. I know some of the books are patchy (esp the novellas) but I’ll basically read all of it anyway. @bensaufley Yeah, that's a bit weird isn't it. I absolutely love her poem The Shortest Day and it is very meaningful to me. And I guess I loved her secondhand because my daughter does.
But obviously I am overdue to read the series directly and am going to rectify that immediately!

Would not miss it for the world! I have loved the books since childhood and was there for the Twitter read-through #TheDarkIsReading. And this is just the right time of the year to dive back in again and catch the eerie scent of winter!
