  1. @brokenix just to be clear, I’m not advocating for #TheDam’s service or philosophy over sdf.org ‘s or else, I’m just pleased to see that such a service is based upon #Guix, and promoting it :)

    Even though I’m a #NixOS guy actually, but IMHO both GuixSD and NixOS bring a much better foundation for configuring an operating system, especially now that we have so much free disk space to fill 😁

  2. @shipp Here #TheDam is using #Guix where The Shepherd replaces the init & service management features of #systemd. I’ve not tried it yet, I’m used to #NixOS, a hacky use of the #Nix language and tool to configure #systemd.

  3. @julm I'm enjoying reading the write-up on (the-dam.org/docs/explanations/). Very neat! How many users are there on ?

  4. @brokenix Unless I’m mistaken, #MetaARPA is 33€/year, so more than 3 times #TheDam’s 10€/year.

    MetaARPA ($9 quarterly)

    But thanks! I didn’t know about sdf.org, despite their saddening name (“homeless” in french) they’re apparently pushing the sharing philosophy quite far 8)

  5. @shipp you’d have to ask #TheDam but I guess they just have fun doing it, besides, people do pay for stuffs a lot more crazy I’m sure you know 🙃

    Is the minimal/flawed C code the best actionable way to tackle their stated problem: “almost every widely-distributed piece of software is a complexity behemoth”? Likely not, but that’s a crucial problem nonetheless. I would rather see them embracing #VLSAL (Very Large Scale Application of Logic) as #EdsgerDijkstra once summarized, but #ComputerScience is still young and not teached as much as it should be, though things are improving on that topic.

  6. #TheDam: a #Guix public access server

    #TheDam is a #PubNix –a public access #UNIX server–: a computer running the #GNU #Guix operating system, shared by different people over the internet.

    Get access for 10€/year !

    Also the #TheDam is an experiment in shared and distributed computing:

  7. the server runs services most people turn to corporate social media giants for: text messaging, link sharing and commenting, activity feed sharing; the dam services, by contrast,
  8. - follow the #UNIX and #suckless philosophy,
    - respect their users’ privacy;
  9. the server provides a test bed for experimental software, for example ported from the #Plan9 operating system to #Linux, managed by #Guix; the resulting distributed computing environment blurs the boundary between client and server ;
  10. the community offers training sessions and challenges.
