  1. Live broadcast this Sunday, March 9, 2025 of the #movie, "#AllWeImagineAsLight" on #TheCriterionChannel, 8pm Eastern Time.

    Blurb:

"The Best-Reviewed #Film of the Year

...the award-winning breakthrough from #director #PayalKapadia...See why the critics have been swept away by this celebration of the light and lives of modern #Mumbai—a powerful story of #friendship among working #women and #love against the odds, brimming with #hope and #heartache."

  2. "What's new and different?"

Well, it's not new (1986), but #LizzieBorden's #WorkingGirls is still a very different and great #movie that shows the everyday realities of #SexWork (for white women and their customers) in a specific type of environment.

It's also part of the #Sundance Favorites collection on #TheCriterionChannel

  3. In the 80's, I often caught bits of a #movie while flipping through #cable channels, but never bothered to find out what it was until I caught the very end, and the visuals and music hit me with their haunting power.

I soon forgot the title, and in the 2000's it took me a while to re-find it because the end was my only clue. When I found it, I couldn't find a way to watch the #film.

    #TheQuietEarth, 1985, is #NowPlaying on #TheCriterionChannel.

    Worth watching.

  4. #TheGrifters came out after a (not "the) #SavingsAndLoan (manufactured) crisis and used that indirectly in its depiction of greed and the "conned".

It's relevant in this world of #BernieMadoff, #crypto and #NFT's, #Enron, #StockMarkets, #TooBigToFail, all the other cons and con artists we know and acknowledge as such, and all those very many others that are still considered legitimate.

As history proves, the bigger the con, the more people believe and want to get taken...

  5. It's been a long time since I've seen it, but it was a frequent watch for me back in the 90's.

I'm now craving a broiled hothouse tomato under a generous slice of ripe cheese...

The #trailer is all wrong, musically and tonally:

  6. #TheGrifters, 1990, #DirectedBy #StephenFrears and starring #JohnCusack, #AnjelicaHuston, and #AnnetteBenning is a great #con #hustler #oedipal #noir, even better than the great #HouseOfGames, 1987 (#DirectedBy #Trumper #DavidMamet 🤮)

It has a line that applies to literally every #SiliconValley #VentureCapitalist and #tech #CEO since its release:

"They were making money when everybody was making money. They think that means they're smart."

  7. Madeline's Madeline, 2018, #DirectedBy #JosephineDecker, was difficult and confusing to watch at times, for me, and ultimately rewarding.

#HelenaHoward is magnificent and delivers a performance throughout that makes the revelatory monologue and final scene potent and cathartic, reminiscent of such moments in #OrdinaryPeople and #GoodWillHunting, among others.

  8. I'd completely missed that #PatrickBachau, who played #Lodz in the eerie and very good #Carnivale on #HBO, was in this, but as soon as I heard his voice this time around, it clicked.

  9. I thought I was ready, having seen the trailers and waiting about 8 months after it premiered on #TheCriterionChannel.

    I was not.

I haven't cried so hard over a movie since #DancerInTheDark.

#EO, 2022, #DirectedBy #JerzySkolimowski, is a beautiful, moving, and deeply sad #movie that I can't recommend for everyone, but I recommend everyone watch.

An amazing piece of #art, and display of empathy.

A major warning regarding several scenes with flashing strobe-like light effects and editing.

  10. is one of those serendipitous finds that used to make so satisfying for me.

The best thing (along with ) that I've seen in, and also my introduction to .

The post-80's theme is, sadly, still timely. I don't know if the rest will hold up.

I do know that ending has stuck with me more than 30 years and is why has it in 90's .

  15. #TheCraft, 1996, directed by #AndrewFleming and starring #FairuzaBalk, is currently part of the #HighSchoolHorror collection on #TheCriterionChannel.

It was better than I expected, mostly because of #Fairuza's performance and is a rare #movie with four #female leads, who all behave badly (to very different extent, but still).

Not great #cinema, but good fun, for me, even with the bugs.

  20. #WhiteMaterial, 2009, directed by #ClaireDenis and starring #IsabelleHuppert is another look into the #HeartOfDarkness, this time that of the arrogance of #whiteDenial born of #whitePrivilege.

Maria chooses to ignore reality and believe she, her family, and their plantation will be safe even as a righteous reckoning closes in.

She clings desperately to what was never hers, and earns her just, brutal fate.

    A tense, slow-burn of a #film on #TheCriterionChannel

  21. "How did someone like you produce a child who thinks so very, very much?" (also me, to my parents)

    And that last #scene 👏🏿

    #LosingGround is well-written and #acted, with a lot of really great #shots.

    The #film covers #issues of #womanhood, #patriarchy, #race, #cultures, and more using serious #adult and #intellectual #dialogue that's still too rare in #Black #cinema.

    I strongly recommend this #movie.

  22. A long-forgotten, recently highlighted #movie that showcases #Method #acting and delivers a devastating emotional experience is #Wanda, the most heartbreaking #film I've seen on this list (I've only seen 7, so far).
