  9. This week's #thecompochallenge by @hiro was, on my part, dominated by confusion. I couldn’t get my head around the concept of the golden circle. In addition, I couldn’t find time to actually go and shoot, with this concept in mind. So this week’s entries are from the archives – and I still don’t know whether they would fit at all.

In 2019 we went to Japan and also to Awaji Yumebutai by famous Japanese architect Tadao Ando. The weather was all grey but it was a great trip still. 1/2

  11. Well, this was a difficult assignment in #TheCompoChallenge, but I think I was able to meet some of the criteria for The Golden Spiral.

The image shows an underground station, likely part of the London Underground, given the sign "Liverpool Street" at the top. It features a long escalator descending into the station, flanked by metallic walls with advertisement panels. The ceiling has a distinctive geometric, arched design with rectangular panels. 21. I’m going to use being on holiday as my excuse for aborting on this week’s #TheCompoChallenge (not the fact it’s so difficult), however I do have one from last week that looks like it has a golden spiral in there somewhere.

  23. 📐 Final entry! This is the last photo for #TheCompoChallenge.

This last week was a struggle. I couldn’t find the time to go out and look for stuff, so just dug through the archive at home.

The whole thing was a lot of fun! Thanks, @hiro.

  28. Tardy! And incomplete! Here is my Week 4 of #TheCompoChallenge. The assignment was subject isolation and contract, and I had such a hard time finding subjects!

  38. Golden Spiral

My fifth and final entry in The Composition Challenge is for using the Golden Spiral. This was definitely the hardest one so far; while I can recognize the Spiral or 𝜑 more generally, actually composing an image that uses it is not something I felt particularly happy with outcome wise. Apparently I need a camera overlay that shows the spiral instead of the standard grid. 😂

I will start off by cheating a bit and using a manmade object that was almost certainly designed to closely follow the curve. On Monday after school pickup we walked past this parked vintage-style camper trailer. I cropped my quick shot a bit to put the door window at the upper right crash point.

    It’s even golden(rod)!

Speaking of street parking, yesterday morning it was just above freezing in Seattle, and frost patterns formed on a lot of the cars. The crystal structure on the hood of a Honda CR-V parked up the hill from us made me think of the spiral in the lower part of the image. The originating line almost follows the Rule of Thirds as well.

    Ice to meet you

The café in my work building lobby has this trendy display that until this morning I mostly ignored. The angle of the shelves of faux plants appears to me to curve into the abbreviated market logo on the wall.

    MKTing department

This one from yesterday morning is probably more of a stretch, but this view of high rises near 4th and Virginia, including one of the Westin towers I used in Lines, demonstrates a near-spiral in the negative space of the blue sky.

  40. This #TheCompoChallenge is making me seriously consider buying a camera again. It’s been a few years since I sold all my magical boxes. But honestly, I’m hesitating.

It needs to be small and able to take nice photos. A Fujifilm XM-5 maybe?
