  1. Just arrived - the new biography of one of NZ’s absolute finest bands, The Clean!

Now I have a queue of #music #books to read, thanks to @acb very kindly giving me a book about the story of #Stereolab in 20 songs just the other day.

  2. PSA: you can now pre-order Richard Langston’s biography of The Clean, probably NZ’s _finest_ #indie band (despite tough competition!) from Flying Nun. Says it’s due to ship in April.

There's sun shining all of the time
Yeah, sun's shining all of the time
    Time, time, time, time, time

And sometimes I'm all on my own
Sometimes I'm all on my own
    Time, time, time, time, time

If I took a page from your book
It's gonna be page number nine

  5. #nowplaying - "clean out of our heads," hamish & david kilgour's 1983 syd-folk spin-off of #theclean, as playful & odd as ever. catching up on obits/memories of hamish & feeling both heartbroken all over again but also inspired & awed. a real one.

  6. ❝ “The music business is a business and it’s dollars and cents, charts, units and product, which is totally divorced from what I believe in,” [Hamish Kilgour] told Rip It Up in 1982. “Music inspires you. It makes life more enjoyable … You have to keep experimenting and remain open to things.” ❞ → theguardian.com/world/2022/dec

  7. and if we're being thorough about live tapes by #theclean's early iterations, there are also 20-30 minute fragments of auckland shows from 6 july 1981 & 19 november 1982 (weirdly on the same date as the '81 tape, but some different songs), as well as 1983 demos & a 1984 show by the great unwashed, the kilgours' art/psych spinoff (aka the clean's original lineup). dbs-repercussion.blogspot.com/

  8. #nowplaying - the only circulating full live set from the early days of #theclean, 19 november 1981 at the rumba bar in auckland. as awesome as it is lo-fi, though better than i remembered. mind-eating 17-minute "point that thing somewhere else," pure velvet crunch. hit me up if you have others! mp3 .zip: bit.ly/theclean81

  9. So sorry to hear about the loss of Hamish Kilgour. Beyond the charged magic of The Clean's music, I've always loved his solo work, especially "Crazy Radiance" which has a ragged yet determined persistence:

  10. Awww, boo. RIP to a real one. #TheClean were always on rotation during my college days and the decade thereafter. #HamishKilgour #DunedinSound

  11. It’s awful news to share — #HamishKilgour, one of the three core members of #TheClean and an NZ music legend in general, has been found deceased after being reported missing for some days. A terrible loss. #music nzherald.co.nz/nz/kiwi-hall-of

  12. @staticsafe in the 1990s #LoFi used to describe a sort of cross between #punk and #indie, like #Ween, or #Beck, or #TheClean, or the #TallDwarfs. Stuff recorded on 4-track and 8-track tapes in people's bedrooms. It expanded to include stuff influenced by them, like #Pavement, who sounded like they were recorded in someone's bedroom, but I don't think they were. No idea what LoFi means now, or why it's applied to stuff that sounds to me like #TripHop or #DownBeat.
