I posted this about #TheCanary a couple of days ago and I was just thinking how The Canary being seduced by a big donor is exactly why I never liked its pay-per-click model.
On one level you're always going to get crowd-pleasing articles to the point of over-exaggeration because that's what will get the most clicks. (And I've long loathed Canary articles for that).
On the other hand, you've got a mindset that's always chasing money. So when a wealthy person offers you £2m, you just cannot resist.
It's not all people at The Canary, sure. It's probably mostly down to Steve Topple. But it's a flaw in their business model, I think.
But I think other left platforms show the same mindset, shown by how they stay on corporate-owned social media. They might move to a newer platform (like BlueSky or Threads) but they never show any inclination to try decentralised social media, even when you message them and tell them about it.
The thing is, they don't even try to open an account on Fedi. You can easily do both. They just flatly ignore it, which shows their mind isn't open to it.
Maybe it's enshittification or you could call it something else, but while centralised platforms will always turn Nazi with their ragebait and attention economies, left platforms will always turn capitalist as soon as they become big enough for a rich investor to be interested, or for the 'independent' journalists to be offered cushy TV jobs or jobs writing for legacy media.
