Dropping a line to all who’ve expressed interest in watch parties for The Ark.

We’d identified Saturdays midday Eastern Time as the most amenable time overall for the group. However, I never got these launched in the late spring as we’d discussed. I owe you regrets and an explanation.

A major work project took over more of my personal time than I could have expected since May. It’s coming to its conclusion this month. I expect to be able to take on organizing the watch parties after that.

Looking ahead to the fall and winter, and anticipating The Ark season three is likely to run in the spring of 2026, is there a good window for weekly or biweekly watch parties? Is the Saturday window (early Sunday in Japan and ANZ) still the best?

Last, are those in the US able to find a way to view it? There have been reports that it’s leaving Peacock as NBCUniversal disconnects Syfy shows from that streamer.

The Ark continues to be a surprisingly durable entry into the genre of aspirational science fiction shows!

Season 3 is greenlit, to be released in 2026. Sounds like Dean Devlin has succeeded in convincing NBCUniversal that what’s come so far is really just the prequel.

Not sure there’s actually anything more to this than Dean Devlin making best efforts to keep up a positive buzz towards a potential 3rd season for ‘The Ark’ in genre media, but it’s nice to see a some coverage from the red carpet at the Saturn Awards nonetheless.

‘In an exclusive interview with The Direct's Russ Milheim on the red carpet of the 52nd Saturn Awards in Los Angeles, California, The Ark creator and showrunner Dean Devlin was asked if he could share any details about Season 3, specifically about a renewal.

While Devlin's response was short, it will still give fans hope, as he simply replied, "Stay tuned."’

Glad you hung in with ‘The Ark’!

In my view season two is even better. I really wish they’d replaced that 1990s quality CGI title sequence, but we can still hope for it in a third season.

It’s interesting how streaming has made us so insistent that shows reach a certain peak in quality right out of the gate. It’s encouraging fast decisions on cancellations it seems and is getting in the way of experimentation and of new shows finding their audiences.

There’s a truism that after TOS, all new Star Trek shows need a couple of seasons to truly find their voice and quality. It’s said of other shows too. So when sci-fi television fans say they want older style shows, I feel we need to challenge them to hold their powder on criticism and them at least as many episodes as they gave the older shows to find their quality.

[I never realized how bad most of the first two seasons or The Next Generation are until I was curating a group of episodes to introduce our kids once they’d worked through TAS in primary school. (6 episodes out of 26 was my set for season one.)]

Anyhow, hope you’ll join our @thearkchat and rewatch parties yet to come, likely after the February sweeps cluster of new releases.

Glad to hear that the two of you are enjoying ‘The Ark’ nonetheless.

I’m of the view that those who are saying they’re looking for a return to aspirational 70/80s/90s sci-fi, and don’t care if there’s low production values, should consider this show an alternative model to what they’re critiquing on the streamers.

Its unrepentantly low production values and optimism won me and others over. And there turns out to be a large and vocal Gen Z following that got the renewal for season two. Don’t expect news on season three before April’s presentations to advertisers but it was still pulling relatively well in a target demographic.

Anyhow, I find ‘The Ark’ so much fun that I have set up a group chat bot to support sharing news, chat, watch/rewatch parties.

Hope you’ll join in! This seems like a show that will be most enjoyable in a watch party.

This is AWESOME!

While not that much more is said here by EPs Devlin and Glassner, the strong implication is that they’re expecting S3 to be greenlit, but also that they already have mapped much of it out…

“ Dean Devlin: To a very real degree, all of season 1 and all of season 2 is the pilot episode. That the actual series begins at the beginning of season 3, because the Arc is not just a lifeboat, it is a search and rescue vehicle, and now there's a new home to bring them to. But is the home everything they hope it is? Are there problems on this home that they don't know about?

And where are they going, and where are they finding people, and are they finding who they're supposed to find? Or are they having other kinds of adventures? Who are they bringing back to the planet? So now we have a show where it's going to be a lot less predictable than what we've done before. It can't be "disaster of the week," and we don't want it to be. It's really going to be a show where any kind of science fiction concept that we want to explore, we'll have a way to do it.”

So glad you’re enjoying it! Also glad to know you’ll be contributing to the viewership stats on Peacock.

I really believe that classic Star Trek and Stargate fans will love it once they give it a chance, but if they don’t get on board soon, it many not get the third season it very much deserves. Like many Trek shows it’s decidedly better after the first season and there’s no reason to believe that it won’t continue to improve after a very strong season two finale.

The it’s hard to know how well it’s doing on Peacock and outside the US this season but the audience was a bit smaller on Syfy US for season two.

I’ve been working on getting a chat group bot set up for ‘The Ark’. I’ve run into a glitch but hope to have it working soon.
