@GeofCox @randahl I don't believe this is 'the political right'. I believe that this is people who are powerful, testing just how powerful they are.
I wrote about it six years ago, and I still believe this is fundamentally true.

I see that the authorities are trying to make us believe that the law applies to the rich and powerful as much as it does to the rest of us by arresting the ex-Prince Andrew and the Prince of Darkness Mandelson in the space of a week.
OK then.
I'll believe it when they get actually convicted and punished. Not before.

Anyone beset with misgivings about where the time went and what you really have to show for your life, I'm pretty sure you didn't get fired from your royal gig as a Prince due to gross moral turpitude, only to subsequently be arrested for misconduct while in public office. You're ok kiddo, you done just fine!

It sounds like "Misconduct in Public Office" is quite a difficult offence to prosecute.
I am very sure that that was very much the intention of lawmakers. It is, after all, lawmakers who are among the people most likely to be prosecuted for Misconduct in Public Office.
Or would be, if they hadn't made it so hard to prosecute.
