The Great Captain has gone insane
lashing at the sea with all his might
as thunder echoes and lightning strikes
will he be forever lost?Dejected souls stand the shoreline
awaiting answers that will never come
feel the rain upon the face
for its the only truth that still exists.The lighthouse keeper has fallen asleep
the light diminishes with each wave
those seeking shelter from the storm
are impaled upon the rocky shore.Voices scream into the darkness
the captain continues his quest
as violent the storm, so too is his wrath

That’s fascinating. Disney+ version of The Abyss has the fluorocarbon breathing rat but is the theatrical version whereas ITVx is the cut version of the Special Edition (but has ads) with the rat off camera. The definition is definitely higher on ITVx as well, something going on there. Anyway I watched the Disney+ version and it was fine. In the UK we haven’t been able to watch it for ages due to the rat scene, but now we can, either with rat or without. But if you want the rat it costs you 20 minutes ;-)

Since I've been laid up in bed with a bad back, I've been watching some movies I've been meaning to watch but haven't gotten around to :corgi_fetch: So tonight I watched the special edition for The Abyss and Dark City.
One thing's for sure, The Abyss special edition is waaayyyy better than the theatrical cut. The theatrical cut feels kind of aimless and pointless without the Cold War sub plot. If you haven't seen The Abyss, I promise you, the extra half hour of footage is worth sitting through. :pupper_wag:
As for Dark City, it was really really good. :ablobfoxbongo: If you like thinky science fiction or dark noir mysteries, you'll like Dark City a lot. It's a lot like the Matrix if the Matrix was more campy, thoughtful, and, I dunno, more reigned in? I love the Matrix and I loved Dark City. :blobfoxfloofhappy: The late 90s were such a gold mine for sci-fi. Much like The Abyss, I recommend the director's cut!!! The director's cut doesn't feature much more runtime, but it does cut out a studio-mandated voice over (a la Blade Runner) that basically spoils the entire plot right in the opening. It's dumb. :blobfoxsweating:

The Abyss was good fun. A little too high-paced for my taste but still enjoyed it. The last 20 minutes made me a bit cringe though 🤭 Looks like that is only in the extended version.
Not sure if watching this just before my summer holiday was the right thing, it’ll give me terrible water anxiety.
Fun trivia: rumour has it, James Cameron made this movie as a way of dealing with his own divorce. White men will do anything but go to therapy.

I'm finding a few things from The Abyss archive this morning... Here's a full-page ad in The Hollywood Reporter from the 1990 Oscar campaign. I wasn't eligible for an Oscar because "Sound Designer" was not an award category back then, but they did use my name in the promotion.

I was the sound designer on The Abyss, so I have seen the film many, many times. But it has never looked or sounded better than it did last night in the new restoration. Kudos to Jim Cameron & Gale Anne Hurd & everyone who worked on this restoration. The 125th St crowd in Harlem loved it!
