  1. This preorder could not have arrived at a more appropriate time. #The1619Project

  2. For the record, reading has become extremely difficult for me, especially on serious topics, so yes, #movies can be a good way for me to learn new information.

It's been years, and I'm stuck halfway through reading #The1619Project, for example.

I couldn't bring myself to watch it in the theater, as much as I wanted to, and it's been in my queue since before it was streaming, and still...

I will watch it though, imperfect and difficult as it may be.

  3. I’m a little confused with “the 1619 project” and “the 1619 project a new origin story” are they two different books or is “a new origin story” the first book with extra content?

  4. #Watching #The1619Project (disney+ in australia)

    not just a list of facts, but quite thought provoking;
e.g. the idea that Black Americans are more american than any other members of the USA’s population

  5. On Hulu: The final episode of "The 1619 Project." This one about how systemic racism affects Black people economically to this day. Lack of slavery reparations, once-prosperous neighborhoods destroyed by angry white people, land stolen or taken by eminent domain, highways run through Black neighborhoods on purpose, etc.

  6. On Hulu: another installment of "The 1619 Project." This episode's titled "Fear," about police abuse toward Black people and its long history (and roots in "slave patrols").

  7. On Hulu: the next episode of "The 1619 Project," this one about capitalism. It's using Amazon as its main example of modern capitalism...

  8. Also discussed: the "disco sucks" backlash of the late 70s/early 80s, and how much racism influenced such. Sales were eclipsing rock music, and a disco record-destruction night in Chicago in 1980 was led by the DJ of a rock radio station.

(Unmentioned, but homophobia also likely fueled the backlash...)

  9. On Hulu: another part of "The 1619 Project," this one discussing music. Which delved into discussing Motown, gospel, and also the origins and usage of blackface...

  10. I’m starting to see why the right is so angry about the #1619Project. Of course the minority perspectives that tarnish mainstream American mythology are the alleged reason. But I contend the real reason the #GOP hates the 1619 project is this:

#The1619Project shines a bright light on the clear line connecting #MAGA political terrorism (#Jan6th) and racial oppression (#GeorgeFloyd) under Trump with the #WhiteSupremacy political terrorism prevalent across America during slavery and the Jim Crow.

  11. To all white + non-Black liberals, progressives + “allies”: Understand the U. S. has ALWAYS been fascist.

You can’t assert “All men are created equal” while concurrently ENSLAVING a fifth of the population- who are considered subhuman.

Facts: There NEVER was a period in the U. S. When Black Americans can say “the good old days.” The U.S. has ALWAYS been divided.

When you express shock at anti-Black racism + racial injustice, then proclaim “This isn’t who we are“ and ”The country is so divided RIGHT NOW“ that proves how effective this nation’s propaganda is.

It’s why true accountings of this nation’s full history (like #the1619project) must be taught + acknowledged.

Yes, these are uncomfortable and hard truths that must be faced for any hope of concrete change to occur.

    Please be more sensitive. #antiracism #racism #equality #Justice

  12. Finishing the book, #The1619Project and it’s been…hard mentally, emotionally. It’s also been powerful + necessary for me to read about my ancestors’ sojourn of terror in the U. S.

How they courageously fought + resisted at EVERY turn for their freedom, human rights, families, and dignity. It’s STILL a battle.

Being a sci-fi fan, I will say, there is NO dystopian or post-apocalyptic narrative that comes close to the historical experience of Being Black in the U. S.

This country owes such an enormous debt and humans are the real monsters. #BlackMastodon #BlackFedi #mustread #GoodReads

  13. @Jeffrey_Smith Yeah, I would send him a copy of #The1619Project, then watch him melt into puddle.

  14. #Reparations, in part, means addressing #FederalGovernment policies that gave financial assistance, guarantees, and advantages via the #NewDeal and post-war #VA benefits explicitly to white people, creating the #American #MiddleClass and its legacy of #GenerationalWealth, while denying the same, then and now, to #Black people.

#Redlining, created by the Federal government as a #segregationist tool, still underlies all financing, including credit scores and home loans.

  15. @ZhiZhu
I miss the days when US media wasn't quite as terrified of offending white supremacists.

  16. Rainy and cold here so it's the perfect time to watch some history. #BlackHistory IS #AmericanHistory

#Hulu has #The1619Project airing, an expansion on the Pulitzer prize winning #NikoleHannahJones original 1619 Project.

This series not only teaches the history but shows how this history affects this country to this very day.

Ms. Hannah-Jones lends her authenticity to this project by being the storyteller/host. I highly recommend it.
