  1. This will annoy a lot of people, but I love the "once upon a time, once upon a timelord" opening. #DoctorWho #TheStarBeast

The time has come and the two previously missing but now gloriously present episodes of The Daleks’ Master Plan, namely The Nightmare Begins (Episode 1) and Devil’s Planet (Episode 3), are here to be viewed and reviewed! They appeared not only on the BBC iPlayer but also in full on the US (but not Canadian, feh) Classic Doctor Who Youtube channel, and we have viewed said episodes and have thoughts. But that’s not all we also have an interview with Toby Hadoke, who hosted a screening at Riverside Studios and reflects with Steven on the screening, the episodes, and the overall wonder that is their return!

  3. One definition of insanity frequently shared on social media is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result, and that is basically me with watching episodes of nu-Who. This post brought to you by my watching the shouting and the alternation between lamer comedy and lamer emo moments of the recent "The Star Beast", interspersed with occasional bursts of bombast.

  4. I watched an episode of Doctor Who tonight. The Star Beast with The bloody Meep.

    It was interesting.

However, I'm not going to make this a habit. Yes, way back when, I watched every episode I could lay my hands on. I even bought some episodes on VHS. (I no longer have them.)

    Those times are over.

  5. Finally catching up on #DoctorWho, and sharing some thoughts. #TheStarBeast was very silly fun. Has this show always been this silly?

What I found a bit annoying is its wokeness. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for LGBTQI+ representation but it felt very in my face in this episode. Look, a trans character! Did we mention she's trans? Look, look, look!

NuWho always had great LGBTQI+ chars, but they were always just there, and a normal part of the story, and that was awesome and how it should be.

  6. Not Everyone is Laughing at The Giggle

It’s Monday, as I type this. Earlier today, Simon and I recorded our session on #TheGiggle. Although we generally avoid listening to other opinions before we record, it was not lost on us that all the feedback we had seen online so far was pretty much positive.

Can you enjoy(ish) an episode and still find it maddeningly annoying? Listen and find out.

With the Giggle, there was “the story,” and then there was “the gargantuan seismic event that made the Flux look trivial.” It made for a long conversation, and I have broken it into two parts, which will be released over two consecutive days. Part One has already been released for our patrons on Patreon and will be released to everyone else on Saturday (UTC-07).

    Menace Beneath the Waves

Yes, we did manage to get the time to record our podcast on the #UnderwaterMenace this past week, and it will be out on December 23rd, just in time for Christmas. Some might say it’s a Christmas miracle, but I wouldn’t.

This is our second take on the Underwater Menace, the first being back in 2016 when they released the story on DVD with the worst photo snap reconstruction in the history of time itself. It was so bad the Time Lords declared the whole thing a war crime.

Now, fully animated, it’s time to reconsider the story. It’s out now in the UK and will be released in the US in early January.

    Onramp to the Fediverse

There’s a lot of trial and error involved in getting on board the Fediverse. This week, it has felt mostly like error.

When we first connected, everything we posted went live on the Fediverse. Yes, that’s more or less what we wanted, but there are no backsies. Once it’s out there, it cannot be removed.

Imagine my horror when it posted the scheduled post of #TheStarBeast and included the entire post, including the synopsis.

If you’re listening to Fusion Patrol, you know that there will be spoilers – the very premise of the podcast is that you have to watch the show first (or not be concerned with spoilers.) This is why I have no problem including the synopsis on the website; however, what goes out on the Fediverse serves a couple of different purposes, one of which is to try to induce new listeners to join us. To do that, you have to flag down people who, in the case of the Star Beast, are interested in #DoctorWho, so the content needs to be different, and basically just blasting out the entire plot line of a brand new TV show without content warning was just bad manners.

And there’s no way to delete it and try again.

I’ve not yet found a workaround, so this week’s #WildBlueYonder went out with no synopsis. That’s not ideal either, but for the moment, it will have to do.

This week, we also (finally) managed to get a test website up – this allows me to test changes to the Fusion Patrol website and the Fediverse integration without flooding your feeds with test messages. So far, every idea I’ve tried to reach a compromise has failed.

  7. SPOILERS

    Finally could watch #TheStarBeast
Some minor flaws imo concerning how they connected Rose's transness with the whole binary/non-binary scenario. (When she didn't even seem to be non-binary.)
But all in all, this was so FUN + felt like DW!
And I have to love the Meep. Miriam Margolyes of all people and I had no idea!! She did a fantastic job!

  8. Screengrabs for all the quotes from the episode The Star Beast are now uploaded!

    Fantastic episode.

  13. CW: Doctor Who spoilers!!!

*This*. This is the way to solve the metacrisis so you can have Donna, AND do with a powerful message attached.
I don't know if RTD had a trans consultant for this episode, it really feels like he didn't and I really wish he had, as it would have allowed for a more coherent message like what is suggested here.

  14. CW: #DoctorWho #TheStarBeast

Also fairly random point but something about how The Doctors coat flowed with his movements reminded me of Jack Harkness. It just didn't move, or didn't fit him, like they did with Ten. This could be Tennant is older, moves a bit differently or maybe put on a few pounds so it drapes his body different, though I'm wondering if that might have been somewhat deliberate as part of differentiating 10 and 14.

  15. CW: #DoctorWho #TheStarBeast

And even aside from all the trans stuff there was a cool story.

I liked that while Donna was suspcious of The Meep from the start, and did drop an "I told you so"... Rose was never criticized for starting with kindness. It didn't work out, that way, but no one said she was wrong for starting with it.

  16. CW: #DoctorWho #TheStarBeast

I also think that random kid who was watching stuff happen and chatted with Rose a bit was important, because not every trans person has parents as awesome as Donna and Shaun, but they need to be reminded there are still people out there who will respect who you are. He had almost nothing to do as far as the plot goes, but in terms of the social impact of this episode he becomes much more important.

  17. CW: #DoctorWho #TheStarBeast

Donna and Shaun were shown to be good supportive parents, they loved and supported their daughter, her being trans had all of zero impact on this. They were not presented as particularly heroic for this, or that they struggled, they just supported their daughter because of course they supported their daughter.

It was presented as just a thing good parents do, completely routine and as normal as it should be in the real world, and some early scenes where neighborhood assholes were misgendering Rose, it's clear this isn't a world where they're ignoring that transphobia exists. It does, but normal good parents will support their kids.

  18. CW: Spoiler? Doctor Who - The Star Beast

  20. CW: Spoiler? Doctor Who - The Star Beast

Okay, sie halten sich nicht lange damit auf, die Gang wieder zusammenkommen zu lassen. Das passiert einfach.

Und ein Raumschiff stürzt über London ab. Natürlich. Und Donna bekommt nichts davon mit, natürlich :)

  21. CW: Spoiler? Doctor Who - The Star Beast

Ayyyyyy, die wirbelende TARDIS, so ein wunderschönes Intro <3

Erinnert mich an die aktuellen SciFi Intros aus Star Trek, Orville, mit ihren wunderschönen Glamorshots.

  22. One thing I wish we'd had an explanation for in The Star Beast: why did the Doctor's clothes regenerate too?

  23. For everyone enjoying the new #doctorwho with DT, Donna, and Beep the Meep here’s a lovely splash page opener from one of the instalments of the original comic strip from Doctor Who Weekly - as it was then. Script by Pat Mills and art by future @Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons. This story opened the run of the then new weekly putting the Doctor’s adventures firmly on a more realistic Earth that young readers would be familiar with. #DoctorWho60th #AllHailTheMeep #thestarbeast

  25. CW: Doctor Who Spoilers

I love how #TheStarBeast ends with Tennant screaming "OMG we could end up anywhere in time and space!"

But you know for a fact it's either gonna be London or Cardiff

    #DoctorWho #DoctorWho60

  26. The biggest lesson I learned from #TheStarBeast is that, like S3 of #Picard and *gestures widely at the #MandoVerse* when you get fan service right, it really fucking works

Disclaimer: this is not a complaint, I am that fan being more than happily serviced!

  27. Don't mind me just gonna sit here and watch The Star Beast for the 37th time in a row.

    #doctorwho #doctorwho60th #thestarbeast

#DoctorWho

  29. And we're up. The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire is now up and ready for you to listen and subscribe. Hear our first impressions of The Star Beast.

  30. So, I've done it... I've only gone and written something - a new blog post on #DoctorWho #TheStarBeast

    penwing.me.uk/?p=67

  31. CW: Spoilers, Sweetie. (Trans, personal)

I think they way he handled the character of Rose, and the interpersonal relationships was handled wonderfully.

The misgendering of Rose, the deadnaming, her wordless pain and response, AND Donna's response said so much in just a couple of scenes.

Sylvia expressing her frustration at the complexity, and her feelings around trying to say and do the right things for Rose, and not being quite sure? It was lovely, and so layered.

But that denouement at the end of the episode... I am at a loss for words. Doctor Who has never made me cry before; that the resolution, not just to the A-story, but to the meta-story (in both senses), was Rose's non-binary nature, touched me at a deep and sensitive point.

I've been wrestling for the last few months with my own trans-ness. The disconnect between my mind and my body, the lifetime of gendered expectations, my own revulsion at a body that doesn't fit.

Existing in a place where my mind excludes me from one side of the binary, and my body and the engendered expectations thereof, exclude me from the other side of the binary.

My knowledge that I can never feel a sense of belonging as a man, and the heart-rending fear that I will never feel a sense of belonging as a woman.

Then, in one shining moment, I was presented with the idea that my #trans-ness, my existence between the binaries, could be a good and beautiful thing in and of itself.

...and that's when I burst into tears.

    Thank you, Russell T. Davies.
