Today I am watching the first 4 Star Trek movies, but I’m in the midst of introducing TNG to my kiddo. A couple days ago, our watch-through reached The Drumhead. That episode is over 35 years old, but it felt frighteningly, unsettling relevant
"With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably." The first time any man's freedom is trodden on, we're all damaged.
She, or someone like her, will always be with us, waiting for the right climate in which to flourish, spreading fear in the name of righteousness.
That's how it starts. But the road from legitimate suspicion to rampant paranoia is very much shorter than we think.
We think we've come so far. Torture of heretics, burning of witches, it's all ancient history. Then—before you can blink an eye—suddenly it threatens to start all over again.
Even after 60 years, Star Trek still has lessons to teach.

It’s why, for all that it’s otherwise not a great episode, I think TNG’s Family exemplifies a lot of what I love about that show. After a traumatic incident, Picard goes home to rest and recuperate and ends up in tears, speaking aloud what he is most afraid of and most ashamed of. In front of another man, no less. And when he tells his brother that he “wasn’t strong enough”, he doesn’t mean, “wasn’t strong enough to kill the borg” he means “wasn’t strong enough to resist their mind control and save more people”.
