Just finished listening to the Audio book version of The Meg by Steve Alten.

It was a good slow burn and I really appreciated the adding in of pov of the Meg from time to time to build tension as well as provide some context to its actions. In addition, I really like that the Meg is just an animal. It isn’t till humans attack it that it becomes more movie monster, but even then, it generally stays away from humans and mostly is feeding on whales and stuff.

Greg and I usually spend Friday evening through to Monday morning on a call together.

He noticed this afternoon that the cinema near him that has huge screens is showing The Meg for £3 today, and both he and his wife love monster movies - she especially loves shark movies. So he asked if it was ok that he take a couple of hours away from our time together to take her to the movies.

Of course I said yes, because I love him and I love her, and I love them both as a couple, and I want to be able to do things to make them happy.

..also, when do you ever get the chance to see shark movies at a cinema, let alone one with huge screens??

Let's be clear, Meg 2 The Trench isn't a good movie...but also, it kinda is.

You know exactly what you're getting...and it delivers it. It's stupid, it's fun, it's got jump scares and comedy (although it needs more of the latter). It will entertain you and given the villain of the piece is a giant shark, why would you watch it at home?

There are people who would never consider seeing a giant shark movie. The Meg 2 is not for you. Then there are people who like horror, but would need some convincing, would need some proof that it wasn't going to be stupid or ludicrous or loud or silly, who would be open to it if there was some kind of innovative, creative, clever take. The Meg 2 is not for you either. Then there are people who heard "more giant shark with Jason Statham" and said "FUCK YES, sign me up" and The Meg 2 is a stone cold jackpot for us.

Ben Wheatley didn't sign on to elevate the franchise into something serious like Jaws. He signed on to have a blast doing bonkers sequel shit like Jaws 2. And he was very successful on that front. Fun time.
