Weil sich wohl doch keine neun Millionen Menschen finden werden, die in einem 170 Kilometer langen, 200 Meter breiten und 500 Meter hohen Glaskäfig mitten in der Wüste hocken wollen, überlegt man jetzt in Saudi-Arabien, die Bauruine von #TheLine in ein Datacenter für Künstliche Intelligenz umzuwidmen.

Gut, an Intelligenz scheint es bei dem Projekt #NEOM ja bislang eher gemangelt zu haben. Vielleicht hilft es ja. Viel Spaß mit der Kühlung!

The B1M does a fantastic job explaining the inspiration for The Line (which has roots in cyberpunk) and the decision to use mirror walls (inspired by an actual building).

Whether the project will succeed or fail depends on what happens next year, as the world awaits to see if the first phase of the project rises out of the desert in 2026.

In what should be a surprise to no one but the most gullible, #TheLine finally seems to be dead. It still doesn't seem clear if #MBS actually thought he could build it, but regardless, it seems like his unrealistic visioning ended up being useful for the other Saudi leaders to rebuild the foundation of their society for the future.

@NewtonMark I think I know a way to save NEOM/The Line.

Here's how the Crown Prince, Beloved Leader of Saudi, can not only deliver, but enhance his vision of a ~180 kilometre long city of the future.

First, we need to save some money. So let's start by taking the roof off the travel corridor.

Instead of "the line", I call this cost-reduced version "the street".

In this configuration, you have an open-air "street" with separate "buildings" on either side.

And sure, a single long east-west street is certainly visionary.

But you know what's better than one? Twenty.

That's right, we'll have 20 streets running east to west.

But why stop there?

Let's bisect the 20 east to west streets with 20 more running north to south.

That's 40 streets in total.

If we divide the 180 km total length between these 40 streets, we're left with a length of 4.5 kilometres each.

I call this vision "the grid".

Now, because each of these streets are now 4.5 kilometres long, we can travel from one end of each street to the other far more quickly than a maglev could travel 180 kilometres.

And we'll do this in a futuristic pod-like vehicle powered by renewable electric power.

I call these vehicles: Trams.

So you'll have a "network" of these "trams" running along this "grid" of 4.5 kilometre long "streets". With 20 "streets" running north to south and 20 "streets" running east to west.

Best of all, instead of being one continuous building, in this configuration the buildings are divided up into "blocks" that can be developed as people move in!

I know it's a bold and futuristic vision.

But in this "grid" configuration, with streets, blocks, and trams, I believe the Crown Prince can deliver his vision of a city of the future.

(Some minor argumentative/perspective issues re: traditional cities, i.e. urban sprawl and traffic problems are only indirectly a result of century old organic growth, but also caused by things which could be changed for the better with sufficient political/cultural will, like updating zoning laws, limiting real estate speculation, limiting privatized spaces, investing in decent public transport/infrastructure, supporting working from home etc. — none of it new...)

If I learned one thing from working with generative design for years, nature always wins, in the end... One can try to impose artificial constraints for some temporary, local improvements, but top-down designed solutions (usually by a small group of people who think they know it all) hardly ever stand the test of time, or the test of chaos and unpredictable events... Natural systems and those designed to be (or rather assembled) bottom-up are much more amenable to these forces of change... In the case of projects like "The Line", it's just upsetting how many resources & lives will literally be wasted for these kinds of vanity projects... Ozymandias says hi!

Ich hab "Das wandelnde Schloss" von #Ghibli Studios extra auf DVD bestellt und gestern geschaut, weil ich mir aufgrund dieses Beitrags von @ews und #arte Inspiration erhofft hatte. Bin ehrlich gesagt glatt enttäuscht. Der Film ist nicht schlecht, aber mit #Solarpunk hat er mE gar nix zu tun.
Die Energiequelle des wandelnden Schlosses ist ein Holzofen. Genau genommen ein Dämon in Form einer Flamme, die um das Herz eines Messie-Zauberers herum lodert und ständig mit Holzscheiten, Eierschalen, Speck und Haaren gefüttert wird. Die Protagonistin bemerkt #DasWandelndeSchloss auch zuerst am Brandgestank, bevor sie es hört oder sieht.
Das restliche Leben läuft ganz normal ab, abgesehen von Zauberei und Krieg. Mit den Einnahmen der Auftragszauberei kauft die Protagonistin auf dem Markt ein. Anbau wird nie thematisiert.
Das Thema Kinderarbeit lasse ich mal aus.

Die Ausschnitte der Arte-Doku waren gar nicht aus irgendeinem Solarpunk-Film, sondern aus einer Werbung (Auftragsarbeit für #Chobani) aus der Feder des Animationsstudios #TheLine mit Titel #DearAlice.

Der Kommentarbereich ist wie so oft lesenswert: Man schüttelt den Kopf über Einwegbecher und darüber, dass diese 79 Sekunden Joghurtwerbung als ikonisches Videomaterial zitiert werden, weil es sonst nichts Brauchbares gibt.

Potential unpopular opinion, but I like what #TheLine and #projectneom can become in the far future.

Yes, it is potentially a lot waste of money and controversial, but has humankind we should progress forward and such futuristic cities is just something we currently see already in science fiction movies/games.

Two young men decorate the underpass on the Line in Blackrock this evening with spray paint. There are fabulous murals on both walls of the underpass!

Fun fact: spray paint, the tool of choice here, was invented in 1949 by Edward Seymour, on the suggestion of his wife, Bonnie.
