Yesterday we talked to an old friend who just came back from a longer trip to China and Taiwan. A family-visit actually.

That triggered my inner slide projector. But those days when I was there +35 years ago are long gone. The city and the county as a whole looks and works a lot different.

I never scanned all my slides, but some I found now in the depth of my archives. All of these show working people in or near a park in Beijing. Therefore I called that little series (there are some more) "Work in China" published under "The human Condition" - like we editors handle things.

I was on my own, just with my cameras Contax RTS I+II, Zeiss-glass and my journalistic eye - and speaking almost no chinese. No problem. It was great. There is not one stolen shot, BTW.

I have extremely positive memories especially concerning genuine, friendly people I met in person. That was amazing. And the fantastic food anyway. Sidenote: That has been my personal experience all over the world.

(I wish I could say that for some encounters in the digital web-world nowadays as well.)

Shirley Baker (1932 – 2014) was one of Britain’s most compelling yet underexposed social documentary photographers. Her street photography of the working-class inner-city areas, taken from 1960 until 2000, would come to define her humanist vision. Shirley’s curiosity and engagement with the everyday world around her resulted in many different strands of work, many of which are yet to be exhibited, each of which confirms her acute observation, visual humour as well as compassion for the lives of ordinary people as distinctive in its exploration of post-war British culture.

Preparing the fish

I took this shot late in the evening in the harbor of Aden, Yemen. It was late, but these guys were still working on the latest catch in order to sell it early the next morning. This man was shouting something - I did not understand what.

Yemen is a fascinating country in every aspect. I met some amazing people.
