  1. Our trip to Florida last week was sick, both literally and figuratively. It was figuratively sick in that it was a great time. It was literally sick in that Jen and I both came home with head colds. No Covid this time. We did that on a Florida trip back in September 2023. This time it is just a persistent, annoying, bad cold.

That’s two Disney World trips in a row where we were sick on the drive home. Well, last time I got sick on the day we got home. I was okay for the rest of the drive. Jen was really sick the whole way home.

I have to pause to acknowledge the fact that a Red Tail Hawk just attacked something at our bird feeder. I don’t think it got anything, but it swooped out of the sky and landed on our little patio. I saw it there for a second before it bolted into the woods. Hawks are freaking cool.

Okay, back to the subject at hand. Travel. Now that we are home from Florida it is time to tentatively plan not only the next vacation, but the next two vacations.

Tentatively, we’re looking at Southern California in the fall. Maybe September. If we do it, we will split the time between San Diego and Disneyland in Anaheim. After that it will be Orlando again at some time around Jen’s birthday. She has a milestone birthday in 2025 so we are going to want to do something epic. We’ll see if the kids can join us for this one. Maybe Jen’s mother and step father too. It’s all hypothetical at this point. For us though, half the fun of a big vacation is planning the big vacation. We’re well into that process already.

In closing, here are a few pics from our drive down to Florida. We stopped at Castillo de San Marcos in St Augustine, FL and just spent a few minutes wandering around the fort and the neighborhood around it.

That’s way more pictures than I was planning to use for this post. It doesn’t include any of the film shots either. I still need to send those out for developing. Woah!

  2. Now that we’re home from our epic Disney World road trip adventure…

We’re starting to plan the next one…

and the one after that too.

I think we may have a problem here. Or not.

  3. I mentioned the accident we drove past today. We were going North on route 95 and the accident was on the Southbound side. Jen was driving so I was able to grab a couple of pictures.

Here’s hoping everyone is okay. Fingers crossed.

  4. Construction traffic…

    Accident traffic…

    Breakdown traffic…

    So much traffic.

We made it out of Florida and most of the way across Georgia. We did not get to Savannah in time for a romantic date night on our anniversary, but we did make it to the city. We have some things we need to do in the morning that will delay our departure, but we’re already trying to think of some places to stop and visit as we head North. Here’s hoping we’ll have better luck out on the road tomorrow.

Though we did get a little snippet of good news along the way. Not that it will have any affect on anything at all.

  5. Happy 15th anniversary to the love of my life, Jen.

We are back on the road, heading North toward home, but we are thinking about a date night along the way. Maybe something in Savannah, GA? We will see.

  6. Check out the nerd, upping his film stock game to some real stuff. We are going to be out late tonight so I want to use something fast, and I want to see if I can have fun with that halation thing all the YouTube film channels talk about.

I’m hoping 36 shots with little haloes around the light sources, but I’m going to end up with 36 indecipherable blurry messes.

  7. We’ve been in Magic Kingdom for a couple of hours and strangely the crowd might be the smallest we’ve ever seen here. It’s almost weird.

We have been bombing on and off of rides so quickly that I’ve barely had time for photo-fun adventures. You’re all probably relieved to hear that.

  8. We are in a hotel room about three miles north of the Georgia/Florida state line. We could have made it into Florida tonight, but we just decided not to. We left the last hotel at 6:00am and stopped a little before 9:00pm.

It’s been a long day. Seriously.

  9. We’re not hitting the road for another four or five hours, but I went out and topped off the gas tank this morning…

So get used to pics like these, my kind, brilliant, lovey readers and only friends.

  10. We are less than 24 hours away from The Great 2024 Florida Road Trip. Actually, less than 22 hours, if all goes off according to the schedule. I have two hours left in today’s work day, and then four hours of work tomorrow…

…and mentally it is really difficult not to just check out now.

All of our clothes are packed. I still need to hit the grocery store to get some bottled water for the drive, and I need to pack up my weight loss surgery friendly food options, and all of our electronics and chargers and various stuff. Then I just have to load it all into the car and go go go, babie.

The only downside of this epic trip is that these two super heroes won’t be coming with us:

If there had been a way for them to come along, we would have made it happen. They both have tons of things going on this weekend up in Vermont. We will miss them. We’ll probably bomb them with text messages the whole time so that they don’t feel like they are missing out on anything (hehe, kidding… or am I?).

I’ll just have to fill in the gaps with lots of faux artsy photographs. You know, like ya do.

  11. We’re leaving for Florida a day and a half from now. What do we need to do before we leave?

Tonight we’re packing. I did all of the laundry in the house over the last couple of days. We need to sort, fold, and put away what isn’t going with us, and pack what is.

We need to pack toiletries. Everything that is coming along that isn’t going to be needed tonight or tomorrow needs to be packed.

On Friday morning before work I need to go to the grocery store and pick up some stuff. Bottles of water, maybe some Gatorade, and ice for the cooler… assuming we’re taking the cooler. Maybe we shouldn’t. It’s going to eat up a lot of room. I might be changing my mind on that one. I also need to pack up a ton of protein bars and sugar free snacks. I also, also need to figure out how to keep that stuff from melting in the car. Maybe the cooler is coming after all. I have an insulated lunch bag that I can throw an ice pack into that should work on a day to day basis, but we’re talking about a multiple day drive. I will also need to bring a stash of stomach safe foods to the parks each day, and I will need to have some for the drive home. That’s a lot of protein bars. I don’t know. I need to think about this.

What else? Chargers for our iPhones, Apple Watches, Air Pods, and laptops. All that needs to be packed. I also need to figure out exactly what my camera needs will be. One digital (my Nikon Z5) and one film (my Nikon FG-20, I think). Do I bring two lenses for the Z5? How much film should I bring for the FG-20? I also need a back pack to hold all of this stuff while I journey through the parks each day. I think I know what to do about all of this. I just have to pack it up.

Should we get an audio book for the long drive there and back? We’ve done that before. What book though? Do you think Jen will be down to listen to Isaac Azimov’s Foundation? Am I down to listen to that? Probably not. There’s a new Stephen King short story collection coming. Is that out yet? Maybe just go with the old standard and listen to a Harry Potter novel? I would be fine with any of them, but 3, 4, and 7 are my favs.

This seems like a lot of things to take care of before we go, but it’s really not. We’ll have everything set long before we load up the car and head out on Friday. The only real question I have is, will this place be open when we drive by?
