The bit that you skip #242: Wanda Jackson – Funnel of Love
“Women don’t sell records” is the infamous phrase thrown at Wanda Jackson in the late 50s. That probably sparked her furious energy that spilled into a long career in music.
With both wings firmly clasping blues, rock, and country, Wanda Jackson’s vocals are protopunk. Sure, the country standards and duets in the beginning were more of a dulcimer-style delivery, but once she crossed paths with rock and roll, well, you understand how she opened a path for stars like Joan Jett, Cyndi Lauper, and Adele.
Funnel of love is a strange beast. A b-side to Jackson’s megahit Right or Wrong, Funnel of Love sorta predicts the future: there’s a tinge of psychedelia, a kin to what 13th Floor Elevators or Quicksilver Messenger Service would do during the 60s. That guitar solo could easily be replaced by a sitar, and you’d get George Harrison’s masterful solos.
You wouldn’t expect such a trippy yet catchy song from the album art, but that’s the beauty of music. Heck, such a great tune, there’s even a version with The Cramps!

2025 Europe reissueNeeded a little musical high voltage to get me out of bed and moving today, and The Cramps will have no problem doing so.
My love for this album goes back to when I was a punk kid, getting stoned and skating down at 8-Ball Skate park.
Both this and Songs The Lord Taught Us were always in heavy rotation, along with the rest of our cherished musical fare.
“Goo Goo Muck” and “Primitive” are perfect tunes.
They all are, really.Slashing guitars, menacing and sleazy, warped and psychedelic.

Newly unearthed, long-lost archival studio album officially released today.
The 12-track collection consists of raw, previously unreleased 1977 recordings from the band's historic sessions at Ardent Studios in Memphis, produced by Big Star legend Alex Chilton.Henry Rollins and Ian MacKaye stepped in to spearhead the tape conversion, curation, and preservation process.

“Rollins, now 65, was a frontman for the legendary Southern California #punkband Black Flag and later the MTV mainstay Rollins Band. Since retiring from music, he’s been a spoken word artist, radio host, actor, journalist, and TV presenter. The best friend he mentioned is Ian MacKaye, who fronted Minor Threat and Fugazi and co-founded and still co-owns Dischord, one of the most influential DIY record labels of all time. Their friendship is the stuff of #punk legend; they also worked at Häagen–Dazs together as teens. And like so many punks and rockabilly fans—and millions of other freaks and weirdos—Rollins and MacKaye fell fast and hard for #theCramps. “
