  1. Shadows of a thousand years rise again unseen. Voices whisper in the trees, “Tonight is Halloween!”

    Dexter Kozen

It’s Halloween – a time when the veil between the living and the dead is believed to thin – very thin.

Somewhere deep within our subconscious there are shadows and nagging fears that ghosts may haunt the living. Steeped within the memories of ancient days, we hold supersitious beliefs that have come down through those who have gone before. Of course, we do not belief in ghosts!! But are we absolutely certain? Perhaps it is our curiosity that pushes us to seek the unknown, the dark spaces where mystery and danger reach out to us and excite our imagination.

Halloween is a reminder of unseen possibilities. Even those who vehemently deny ghostly encounters, have heard the stories of people experiencing a sense of the uncanny in old buildings, dark woods, or serene graveyards – an affirmation of a pervasive belief in the existence of apparitions. This fascination speaks to our innate desire to explore the boundaries of life and death, those things that may lie beyond our understanding. If remnants of the past linger, then the stories of the past remain alive and combine with ours in the present.

The story of humanity is indeed a rich tapestry that weaves the past with the present.

From ancient Celtic rituals honouring Samhain to the modern-day festivities filled with costumes and trick-or-treating, Halloween embodies a blend of reverence and revelry. As we don our masks and carve pumpkins, we connect with the echoes of our ancestors. This season of spookiness stirs us with of the age-old tales of ghosts and goblins that continue to walk alongside us.

Ghostly Encounters at the Bent Mast!

In our travels to Victoria, British Columbia over the years, The Bent Mast has become our go-to place for dining. There is always a warm welcome. We understand that the house is haunted. This haunting is evidenced by those who maintain that they have experienced a paranormal event.

It is said that there are three spirits who live in this House.  A happy child who stays in the upper floor and likes to play on the stairway.  A grouchy, but harmless older man, who moved from the basement to the upstairs area and to the kitchen where he enjoys scaring the unsuspecting by hiding things or knocking things over. The last spirit is a motherly woman who has made the entire house her home.  She is known for her nurturing, compassion and care.

There have been many ghostly encounters over the years.  The spirits seem make contact in their own way.  A young daughter told her mother that she spoke with a little girl on the staircase. A customer saw an old man dressed in an old-fashioned suit sitting upstairs but was told no one was upstairs.  A phone with static and strange voices on the other side.  A security camera that captured the image of a bright, bowling ball sized orb appearing at the top of the stairs.

I find that unusual paranormal activities are best experienced before breakfast, in the morning light, rather than in the evening darkness. So, join me for breakfast at The Bent Mast

    Happy Halloween!
