  1. Anyway...I feel lucky to be here with all of you.

    Thank you.

  2. Today is Tuesday, and therefore a #ThankYouTuesday.

This is one of the psychologically toughest periods for me in the last 10 years. And my friends - many of whom are here - are giving me incredible support.
I am confident that everything will work out, and what will remain is the memory and the gratitude for what I have been given.

    Thank you, from the heart.

  3. Exactly one year ago, on 30th December 2024, I laid the foundation of FediMeteo.

I took a VM, installed FreeBSD, and set up the first jail to support Italy. The goal was to create a tool for my own use, support a few countries, and announce it.

Unexpectedly, the enthusiasm was incredible. That pushed me to keep going, support more countries and cities, and turn it into what it is today.

FediMeteo now supports 38 countries and 2,937 cities, with more than 7,700 followers in the Fediverse alone, not counting the many people who follow via RSS feeds or visit the web pages.

If you are curious to read the story and some technical details, you can find it here:
    it-notes.dragas.net/2025/02/26

Today is also Tuesday, a #ThankYouTuesday, so I want to say thanks to:

    * OpenMeteo - @openmeteo - for providing accurate, high quality data, without which FediMeteo would be far less useful

    * @grunfink - creator of snac, who made all of this possible using very few resources, on a 4 euro per month VM

    * FreeBSD, which thanks to the efficiency of the OS and its jail implementation made it possible to run this service in a stable and efficient way with minimal effort

    * FediFollows - @FediFollows - that periodically spreads the word about cities, countries, and the enthusiasm around the project

*All of you*, who suggested, encouraged, corrected, and celebrated this project

And forward toward supporting more countries and other interesting features already in the works.

    Happy birthday, FediMeteo! 🎉

  6. For today's #ThankYouTuesday, I'd like to thank everyone who supports the Fediverse. So, that means *you*. Yes, you, the one reading this.
    Thank you!

The Fediverse truly is for everyone: if you don't have the skills or means to set up your own instance, you can join one of the public instances that aligns with your aspirations. If you can and want to, you can create your own instance, and thanks to lightweight (and interoperable) software, you can do it with spare hardware or very affordable VPS.
So thank you to all of you, friends of the Fediverse!

  7. Dev just messaged me, alarmed: a WordPress plugin's tech support logged into his site and broke everything! 😱
But Dev is sharp, and even at 22:10, he remembered his server runs FreeBSD and ZFS. With snapshots of his site and database every 15 minutes, we rolled back to the 20:00 snapshot, and his site was back up in a flash!

Thank you, FreeBSD! Thank you, ZFS!

  8. For this week's #ThankYouTuesday, I want to thank Elena Rossini - @_elena

Elena is an incredibly positive person, one of those people who bring optimism and passion to the Fediverse. She has been a strong supporter of free communication for a long time, detailing the main platforms of the Fediverse and currently working on a video (because yes, she’s also a very talented filmmaker) all about the Fediverse.

Thank you, Elena. You’re one of those people who radiate optimism, positivity, enthusiasm, and passion, and it’s thanks to people like you that free communication thrives.

People are tired of “influencers” driven solely by sponsorships.
Passion, dedication, and genuine belief in a cause make all the difference - and they always will.

  9. In no particular order …

Eric Turgeon – for package repositories, and more.

John-Mark Gurney, Vincent Milum Jr, and others – for FreeBSD-related torrents, seeds, and so on.

    Thomas Hurst – for FreshBSD.

    Dan Langille – for FreshPorts.

    Lucas Holt – for MidnightBSD.

Dmitry Salychev, Grégory Reinbold, Lars Engels, Marcel Kaiser, and Mehmet Mert Gunduz – for NomadBSD.

Shawn Webb – for co-founding HardenedBSD.

JT Pennington, Ken Moore, Kris Moore, and others – for PC-BSD, Lumina Desktop, TrueOS, TrueNAS, and more.

Bob Bruce, David Greenman, Jack Velte, Jim Mock, Jordan Hubbard, Murray Stokely, Pat Rietz, Rod Grimes, Theresa Elam, and others – for FreeBSD Mall, formerly known as Walnut Creek CDROM, and more.

    Thom Holwerda – for OSnews.

    Jesse Smith – for DistroWatch.com.

Stefano Marinelli – for BSD Cafe, and more.

Liam Proven – for no bullshit, by him on, you know.

pfSense of humor – for an excellent sense of humour, and more. I'm tempted to say "nothing more", but that'll be stretching his sense of humour. Too far.

The shortlist above should be much, much longer. Eye-wateringly long. The full list would take so long to compile that Wednesday will arrive in all time zones on planet Earth before I finish. Fact: if I don't click 'Post' ― now ― I'll make myself late for work. Again.

  10. For today's #ThankYouTuesday, I want to thank Michael Dexter. @dexter

Michael is someone who is always present, both physically and morally, at every BSD and ZFS event. He raises funds, organizes, handles technical details, and does all of this tirelessly and relentlessly for many years.
His talks are always engaging and full of valuable content.
It was a pleasure to meet him at EuroBSDCon, and it will be a pleasure to see him again at the first available opportunity.

    Thank you, Michael!

  11. For this #ThankYouTuesday, I want to express my gratitude to SDF.org.

This long-standing community, thriving and healthy, is built on #NetBSD.

Many years ago (I’d have to dig through old emails, but it’s definitely over 20 years), I reached out to them for advice on setting up a public access server (which I ended up not doing). They were incredibly kind and provided me with a wealth of information.
They are also present in the Fediverse - @SDF - showing that they are always keeping up with the times and looking toward the future.

Long live SDF, and thank you for everything!

  12. Phone call received a little while ago:
"Thank you for the proposal, which is economically interesting. However, I have a question - why should I choose to entrust the creation of the new setup to you (I am not directly in charge, but I am part of a team with three other developers) when I can get, for a slightly higher price, the service of Y, which provides ten people and standardized procedures?"

I know Y - it's not a bad company, but it's the classic group with many juniors, written procedures, and a few standard setups that they apply to everyone.

I explained that, ultimately, it is his choice. But personally, I would prefer to have something created by people who understand the needs and adapt the setup to those needs rather than a "IKEA style" setup, where ten people simply assemble a setup predefined by a static procedure, without really understanding what's behind it. And at the first problem, they panic because their manuals don't cover that type of issue.

I believe one of the problems in today's society is forgetting that we are human, that each of us has unique qualities, and that not everything is proceduralizable, standardizable, automatable.

Homo sum, humani nihil a me alienum puto.

For this #ThankYouTuesday, I want to thank those who still prefer to deal with humans rather than cold corporate procedures.

  13. Keeping on our #ThankYouTuesday roll, we'd like to thank @FoundryVTT for their 5k+ donation this year. We're proud of the relationships we forge in the FOUNDRY* of friendship that you help us fuel! >

*And the sweet puns are back!

  14. With two days left on our crowdfunding, we want to highlight our 5k+ and 10k+ donors with individual shout outs in this #ThankYouTuesday thread! Several sponsors have already made individual/corporate contributions to help our scholarship outreach go even further this year in uplifting POC and other marginalized voices in our community, and we thank every single one of them. In this thread, We look forward to adding more as they join our hall of heroes!

  15. PS. It bears mentioning that our staff, our volunteers, and our Rangers are BEYOND excited for #BBC24. Later this afternoon, stay tuned for one heck of a thank you thread for our donors. Just call it #ThankYouTuesday!

  16. Thanks to Colin Percival @cperciva – and other members of the Primary Release Engineering Team – for everything that went towards FreeBSD 14.1-RELEASE.

Equal thanks to everyone who tested CURRENT (the main branch), STABLE and BETA.

  17. Willows Cattery

… thank you 💚 for looking after my cats whilst I was out of town.

    Not well-known, traditionally word-of-mouth, it's just lovely.

Bill and Pickle are always so chilled and peaceful when I collect them after their time away from home. When I'm next there, I'll take a photo of them …
