  1. 🎉 Behold the latest groundbreaking revelation: #TextEdit is the hero we didn't know we needed! While the world spirals into #AI #chaos 🤖, a basic writing app saves us from the complexities of modern tech—because who doesn't love a good #ThrowbackThursday to the '80s? 📎✍️

  2. #xcode #Apple Did you know that ⌃(control)A jumps you to the beginning of a line and ⌃E puts you at the end of the line. ⌃K deletes the line forward and ⌃Y pastes it back.

AND all of these work in #xcode, #pages, #bbedit, #textedit, #ivory, #AppleMail, and probably elsewhere.

  6. TextEdit is driving me nuts. Not only is there no way to make "paste without formatting" the default (and they call it "paste and match styles", which is just... WTF, your mindset is so utterly backwards from mine), but also they made the keyboard chord for it completely finger-breaking. Seriously, ⌥⇧⌘V? Try putting your fingers on all those keys at once. Especially compared to the ease of ⌘V!

Someone was just being an asshole.

  7. WTF, Apple. Typing some notes in TextEdit, "T3 = ..." AND IT SUDDENLY GOES:

    T3 =1,339 tn³

Disabling "Text replacement" in settings does not fix this. Neither does "Edit -> Substitutions -> Text Replacement".
How do I remove this terrible thing?

  8. I love Kate, and I think it's nuts to have an app like that as the "default" text editor on #KDE when you compare to what you get on other OSes like Notepad on #Windows and #TextEdit on #macOS :blobfoxboop_w_:

I think the only 2 things that subtly
spoils my experience using Kate if you're familiar with other options the likes of #VSCode, #Sublime, etc. is 1) you cannot open links found in your text through a (combination) click, something you could do in a lot of other text editors, even the terminal, and 2) just little things like the fact that it's unnecessarily awkward to go the next/previous (text) match when trying to find a particular word in your file - this is so jarring bcos this basic thing should be easy but on Kate, it's... awkward due to the out of place and dynamic positioning of the buttons.

But all in all though, besides the two points, it's an insanely solid option - I love the design, its plugin system (tho I avoid using it since it's for me more so a Notepad/
#NotepadPlusPlus replacement (i.e. default text editor) rather than a VS Code replacement), and just ease of use. I could totally see myself using it as my primary code editor if I wasn't just so used to VS Code already.

  9. Enabled Apple's "Intelligence"/AI feature, used it for an hour, then turned it off. That was two weeks ago, and since then, my system has been a mess. Starting #Pages or #TextEdit (and many other apps) caused #corespotlightd to spike to 180% CPU usage, freezing everything. Finally fixed it by deleting a folder in ~/Library... now it's running smoothly again. @Apple, what's going on?! 🤔

  14. sooooo when did this happen?

if you type maths and equals sign it suggests the result as an autocomplete option

and is it AI bullshit that I can expect to be regularly wrong?

  15. Has anyone noticed how TextEdit is working now? I don't remember such performance ever. It takes a couple of seconds to open a 3gb text file.

    #macOS #sequoia #textedit #performance #apple

  16. I have just had to upload a half-dozen #government #job related documents to #googledrive b/c otherwise they're so full of images and associated formatting that they're completely unreadable using #textedit, and I don't have #word b/c I don't nned it.

  17. I'm slow to upgrade #MacOS, preferring to stay about one rev behind to minimize churn, and avoid new bugs when updating my various tools & workflows.

The #MacOSVentura upgrade just before Xmas, was smooth except for the most basic tool: #Apple's #TextEdit app. It's been terrible!

I use it heavily for note-taking, 'cuz it's lightweight, handles text styles well and has always been solid.

TextEdit rev1.18 is fails on text styling, selecting and most importantly on text search…

  18. Is it just me that I use built-in #macOS #TextEdit basically all the time? It's set to "plain" text mode and I use to various kind of notes and temporary text, except code. I would love some improvements for this app in the future!

  19. new macOS #Sonoma cannot write my main.py file under #VisualStudioCode. It's empty and my keyboard is broken. But #TextEdit can write the file.

I have now a new key combo: middle and ring finger on the right side one row down for a hash.

  20. My notes are #PlainText first, #Markdown second. They're highly portable between platforms, apps, and devices. #macos and #ios are my weapons of choice, but they'd look and work the same on #android and #Windows.

    They aren't #Obsidian notes, or #Logseq / #iaWriter / #tangent / #TextEdit / #Nota / #AnyType / #Taio / #TaskPaper / #vsCode notes, though I can use any of those apps as a lens to view and work with them.

They're wild, and free. This is their theme song:

  21. I really find it extraordinary that, after all these years, there are still so many #macOS applications that are still unable to resume properly, by reopening ALL their windows, all in the right POSITION, on the right DISPLAY (in a multi-display setup), and with ALL their tabs properly reopened as well.

    Looking at you:
    - #Finder
    - #Preview
    - #ScreenSharing
    etc.

And then there are some apps, like #Numbers and #TextEdit, that do resume properly… unless you had to do a hard reboot.

    What a mess.

  22. Getting used to #neovim and learning it takes some more time than I thought.

I have uninstalled #vscode for good and do not want to go back to it.

What other options do I have for a fast, compact, native (no electron) text editor on #macOS? Is #sublime still a thing? What other tools would you suggest or recommend?

I feel #textedit on macOS does not cut it for me. 🤭
