one of the small joys of my local used bookstore is their $1 and $2 junk section, buried in a distant corner of the second storey.
there are three racks of what the Wee Book Inn considers to be unsellable paperbacks - often bad 70s self-help, or 60s scifi pulp. but i always come away with something weird and wonderful.
today finds surprised me - someone was obviously into homebuilt aircraft of the 1930s, and dumped their collection of amateur design books, complete with hand-drafted schematics and illustrations. it's a treasure trove for the imagination.
the other oddity was this novelization of a 1980s text adventure: trillium's Shadowkeep, by none other than alan dean foster. what makes it extra unique is that foster designed and wrote the computer game, and then went on to novelize it. as it turns out, it is the first computer game in history to be novelized. if you hadn't heard of Trillium/Telarium, its games were eclipsed entirely by Infocom in historical writing on games.
